Are Heirlooms Worth It? A Guide to Getting and Using Legacy Gear

What are heirlooms

Heirlooms are special pieces of equipment that scale with your character's level and can be used by alts on the same account. Instead of swapping gear every three quests, you equip them once and the item grows with you all the way to level 80.

The reason everyone talks about heirlooms isn't the DPS or the healing — it's the XP bonus. Each heirloom piece with a bonus grants 10% more XP from quests and kills while you're within the level range.

How they work in practice

  • Automatically scale: Equip at level 1 and the item stays relevant at 70, 75, and 80.
  • XP bonus stacks: Two heirlooms with XP bonuses = 20% extra. Three pieces = 30%. A full set can reach 45–50% additional XP.
  • Account-wide: Once obtained, the heirloom is available for all characters on your account. No need to farm for each alt.

Where to get heirlooms on Azeroth Legacy

In WotLK, heirlooms are primarily acquired with Emblems of Heroism — the currency earned by completing heroic dungeons at level 80. Other specific heirlooms come from raids or special tokens.

Where to buy: The heirloom vendor is located in Dalaran (Heirloom Curator). You can see all available pieces, the emblem cost, and which slot each one fills.

Typical cost per piece: 40 to 65 Emblems of Heroism depending on the item.

Which heirlooms to prioritize

Priority 1 — XP Bonus

These are the two pieces you want first, regardless of class:

| Piece | Bonus | |-------|-------| | Shoulders (Heirloom) | +10% XP | | Chest (Heirloom) | +10% XP |

With these two, you're already running 20% permanent XP throughout all leveling.

Priority 2 — Weapon

The heirloom weapon doesn't give an XP bonus, but it ensures your character kills mobs quickly from start to finish. Without it, you may hit a level where your gear becomes weak and mobs take too long to die.

Each class uses a different weapon type — make sure to get the weapon compatible with your leveling spec.

Priority 3 — Ring (if available)

Some servers offer an heirloom ring with an additional XP bonus. If available on Azeroth Legacy, it's a relevant XP upgrade worth pursuing after the main pieces.

Is it worth it if you're new?

Yes, but with one caveat: to take advantage of heirlooms, you need a level 80 character with accumulated emblems — or an account that already has those resources.

If you're creating your first character, you won't have access to heirlooms right away. In that case:

  • Level to 80 without heirlooms (it's perfectly doable, and the server has accelerated rates)
  • Once you have emblems, create your alts with a full heirloom set ready

For players who already have a main at 80, heirlooms are the first recommended investment before creating any alt.

What not to expect from heirlooms

Heirlooms aren't raiding items — they're made for leveling. When you hit level 80, heirloom gear becomes obsolete immediately. Don't try to use them in endgame: swap for heroic dungeon gear as soon as possible.

Another point: heirlooms don't make you invincible. If you choose a difficult class or a poorly built spec, you'll still struggle. The XP bonus speeds up the time, but doesn't eliminate the need to play well.

Quick summary

| Situation | Recommendation | |-----------|---------------| | First character | Level without heirlooms, get emblems at 80 | | First alt | Prioritize shoulders + chest before anything else | | Alt of a different class | Buy the weapon too | | Want maximum speed | Build the full set before starting |

Heirlooms are the best emblem investment for players who want to create alts on Azeroth Legacy. The difference in leveling time is real — and once purchased, the return is permanent for the entire account.
