There is no better healer — there is the right one for your goal
The question "who is the best healer?" in WotLK there is no single answer because the five main healers were designed to do different things. Holy Paladin is the king of tank healing. Resto Druid dominates group sustain. Disc Priest prevents damage before it happens. Holy Priest clears groups with heavy HoTs and heals. Resto Shaman has the most valuable utility kit.
The right choice depends on where you are going to heal, with which group and what style of gameplay you can handle repeating every week.
The five healers and what each one does best
Holy Paladin
Profile: specialized tank healer, highest single target throughput in the game
Holy Paladin is the simplest healer to understand and one of the most powerful in raids. It was built to keep a target alive — the tank — with efficient, fast heals that scale well with gear.
Strengths:
- Flash of Light and Holy Light with very high single target throughput
- Beacon of Light — any heal you do on any target also heals the Beacon by 100%
- Divine Sacrifice — defensive cooldown of 30% damage reduction for the group
- Sacred Shield — renewable passive absorption on tank
- Auras and Blessings that benefit the entire group
Limitations:
- AoE healing very weak without advanced gear — Prayer of Healing is not in the kit
- Low mobility — almost every relevant heal is cast with time
- Not very interesting for healing groups in dungeons; shines more in raid with dedicated tank
Best for: tank healing in raid, player who wants a healer with a more predictable rotation, who likes to "be responsible for the tank"
Requirement: low to heal, medium to max — knowing when to use each CD and how to use Beacon efficiently makes a big difference
Restoration Druid
Profile: group sustain healer, most comfortable for unpredictable situations
Resto Druid heals differently than everyone else — through HoTs (heals over time) that work in parallel without needing heavy casting. This means that even while you move, run, or do some other action, the party continues to receive healing.
Strengths:
- Rejuvenation, Regrowth and Wild Growth — efficient, high-throughput HoTs
- Lifebloom — HoT in stack on tank that blooms on heavy heal when expiring
- Wild Growth — AoE heal on 5 simultaneous targets, one of the most efficient in the game
- Innervate — regenerates mana from another healer, crucial in long progression
- Battle Resurrection — the only battle res in the game, irreplaceable in progression
- High mobility — most heals can be used on the move
Limitations:
- No heavy external defensive cooldown (no equivalent to Pain Suppression or Divine Sacrifice)
- HoT overheal can inflate the log without delivering real value — requires application management
- Tank healing is good, but not the most efficient for heavy single target
Best for: group healing in raid, dungeon with group that takes irregular damage, anyone who wants a healer with high mobility, player who appreciates the "preventive healing" style
Requirement: low for input, medium for maximize — knowing when and where to apply each HoT without overhealing is the central challenge
Discipline Priest
Profile: absorption and avoidance healer, most valuable in difficult content progression
Disc Priest works in a way that no other healer imitates: he doesn't react to damage — he prevents it. Power Word: Shield absorbs damage before it happens. Divine Aegis makes each crit generate a shield. Atonement (with talent) causes Smite's damage to heal the party. It is a unique kit with a very high value ceiling in experienced hands.
Strengths:
- Power Word: Shield — instant absorption without heavy GCD
- Pain Suppression — reduces 40% damage to a target for 8s, powerful external cooldown
- Power Infusion — +20% haste and -20% mana cost for ally
- Divine Aegis — crits generate additional shield
- Rapture — Power Word: Shield returns mana when absorption is consumed
- Weakened Soul management — shield timing defines real throughput
Limitations:
- Absorption does not appear on traditional heal meters — underestimated by groups that only look at healing done
- Requires understanding when to shield, when to heal and when to use Pain Suppression
- Group healing is weak without active Atonement; main focus is tanking and specific targets
Best for: difficult content progression, groups that value damage prevention, player who wants the most "technical" healer in the game
Requirement: high — Suboptimal Disc Priest wastes kit; Well-played Disc is one of the most impactful healers in progression
Holy Priest
Profile: versatile group healer, the most balanced between single target and AoE
Holy Priest is the most complete healer in terms of kit. It has heavy heals for tanking, HoTs for maintaining group, Prayer of Healing for heavy AoE and Circle of Healing for immediate area healing. He is the healer who best adapts to different types of encounters.
Strengths:
- Circle of Healing — instant healing on 5 targets, one of the most efficient group heals
- Prayer of Healing — heavy AoE heal for the raid
- Guardian Spirit — cooldown that absorbs a kill and increases healing received
- Renew — efficient HoT for group maintenance
- Power Word: Fortitude — +stamina for the entire raid
- Desperate Prayer — personal emergency heal
Limitations:
- Without the single target throughput of Holy Paladin
- No passive sustain from Resto Druid
- Without Disc Priest's powerful defensive cooldown
- More "generic" — it's good at everything but not the best at anything specific
Best for: groups that need an adaptive healer, players who want variety in healing style, progression where damage type varies greatly between encounters
Requirement: medium — kit simple to learn, difficult to maximize; knowing when to use Circle vs Prayer vs Renew is the main challenge
Restoration Shaman
Profile: group healer with the greatest utility impact, Chain Heal is the most efficient AoE in the game in the right situation
Resto Shaman has a solid healing kit and, more importantly, the highest collective utility impact of any healer. Bloodlust/Heroism, buff totems, Mana Tide Totem for raid mana — no other healer delivers so much to the group besides healing.
Strengths:
- Chain Heal — chain heal that hits multiple grouped targets, absurdly efficient in groups with nearby players
- Earthliving Weapon — HoT proc on each heal, constant passive healing
- Bloodlust/Heroism — the biggest cooldown in the game, shared with Elemental/Enhancement
- Mana Tide Totem — regenerates mana for all healers in area
- Earth Shield — passive HoT on the tank that searches for every hit received
- Buff totems that benefit the entire party
Limitations:
- Chain Heal loses a lot of value if the group is spread out — group positioning directly affects throughput
- Fewer tools for heavy single targeting than Holy Paladin or Disc
- Depends more on group positioning to deliver maximum value
Best for: groups of 25 where Chain Heal can bounce off many targets, encounters where the group is grouped together, players who want a healer with maximum utility in addition to healing
Requirement: low to enter, medium to maximize — knowing the positioning and timing of Chain Heal is where the value separates

Which healer to choose by player profile
You want tank responsibility
Holy Paladin. Focused kit, clear throughput, direct impact on those who matter most in the fight.
Do you want to heal group without excessive stress
Rest Druid. HoTs work even during movement, battle res and innervate guarantee space, intuitive kit.
You want the most technical and impactful healer in progression
Discipline Priest. Very high value ceiling for those who master the absorption kit and cooldowns.
You want versatility and don't want to specialize
Holy Priest. Balanced kit that works in any situation without requiring extreme specialization.
You want a healer with the greatest collective impact for the group
Remaining Shaman. Bloodlust, totems, Mana Tide — no other healer brings as much besides healing.
Common mistakes when choosing healer
1. Choose by raw throughput in the log Healing log does not count absorption (Disc) and does not show the value of Bloodlust, Innervate or Battle Res. Healer with a lower Recount number may have been the most valuable in the raid.
2. Skip the learning curve Disc Priest in the beginner hand delivers much less than Holy Priest in the same hand. Choose the healer whose requirements you can meet, not the one with the highest theoretical ceiling.
3. Not considering what the group already has If the group already has 2 Holy Paladins, a third tank healer will overheal the tank and underheal the group. Look at what already exists before deciding.
4. Choosing the look or costume without knowing the kit Healer is a demanding role. You will deal with pressure, guilt and stress. If you don't like the way the class works, you'll drop it before you master it.
Minimum recommendation
To choose a healer without regret:
- define whether you want to heal tank, group or have maximum utility
- Honestly evaluate the curve you want to face
- Consider what your group already has before duplicating paper
- test in dungeon before committing to raid
- healer you can handle playing every week outperforms theoretically superior healer you abandon
