Warrior changes profession a lot between tank and DPS?
It changes more than many people admit. In several WotLK classes, the profession answer ends up being similar. In Warrior, this still partly happens, but the reason changes a lot when you compare Protection with Arms/Fury.
Warrior DPS thinks about burst, scaling with gear, cooldown alignment and comfort to maintain competitive damage. The Warrior tank thinks about survival, utility, encounter mobility and, in some moments, stat flexibility to better handle the content. Therefore, the “right” profession is not always the same for every Warrior.
The ideal duos for Warrior DPS
1. Engineering + Jewelcrafting
This is the safest duo for Warrior DPS when the focus is competitive performance. Engineering delivers strong practical value, especially for melee classes that like explosiveness, mobility, and quick response. Jewelcrafting comes in as a stable partner, easy to justify and very consistent in the endgame.
Why it works so well:
- Engineering improves burst feel and real utility
- Jewelcrafting offers clean stat gain
- the duo remains good in various gear phases
If you play Warrior for serious PvE performance, this is the easiest answer to defend.
2. Engineering + Blacksmithing
This duo comes in stronger when you want gem flexibility and, in particular, when the Warrior DPS is trying to fit better cap and gear thresholds. For Fury, for example, Blacksmithing gains an extra argument in early/mid gearing because of the additional sockets.
When it makes more sense:
- progression in which socket flexibility matters
- Warrior DPS who wants to adjust gear more freely
- phase in which Armor Penetration or other cap points are still tight
The ideal duos for Warrior tank
1. Engineering + Jewelcrafting
For tanking, this duo is also very strong. Jewelcrafting takes on special weight because, in addition to the general bonuses, the profession itself is highlighted by Wowhead as very good for tanks because of the stamina trinkets and strong gems exclusive to JC. This goes very well with Warrior tank logic.
2. Engineering + Blacksmithing
Here Blacksmithing also becomes a very defensible choice for tanking. The extra sockets help to better shape the character as needed: more stamina, more mitigation, more fine-tuning according to encounter and available gear.
If you like to control your character profile well and want real flexibility, BS is much more interesting in Warrior than in many other classes.
Professions that scale best by function
For DPS
- Engineering scales very well in practical value
- Jewelcrafting maintains constancy
- Blacksmithing grows in value when gem flexibility solves real gear problem
For tanking
- Jewelcrafting gains an extra argument for synergy with trinket/stamina
- Blacksmithing makes more sense than many people think
- Engineering remains strong through the active and utility package
Maintenance cost by play style
Competitive Warrior DPS
You will tend to spend more on professions that maximize performance, because the damage requirement weighs heavily early in the endgame.
Warrior tank
It may better justify flexible professions, because tanking generally feels the character's fine-tuning value more.
Warrior casual or alt
In this case, a pure meta profession can weigh more on your pocket than on the real result.
When is it worth choosing versatility
It's worth a lot when:
- you use dual tank and DPS spec
- switches between raid, dungeon and PvP
- want a duo that doesn't trap you in just one scenario
- does not want to change profession later
In this profile, Engineering + Jewelcrafting is usually the most balanced answer.
If you are more technical and like fine-tuning your gear, Engineering + Blacksmithing might fit even better.
Decision criteria by objective
Is your focus on competitive DPS?
Go from Engineering + Jewelcrafting.
Is your focus on tanking well with flexibility?
Engineering + Blacksmithing or Engineering + Jewelcrafting.
Does your Warrior do it all?
Choose a versatile and stable pair.
Is your Warrior alt?
It doesn't always make sense to pay the price of the “strongest” duo just for a secondary character.
Minimum recommendation
If you want the most practical answer:
- Warrior DPS: Engineering + Jewelcrafting
- Warrior tank: Engineering + Jewelcrafting or Engineering + Blacksmithing
- Warrior hybrid tank/DPS: Engineering + Blacksmithing gains real value
- Casual Warrior: strong choice, but compatible with your routine and budget
In Warrior, a good profession is not just the one that gives the most numbers. It's the one that best matches the role you're actually going to play.
