Dragons in Warcraft were never just ancient monsters with colorful breath
Dragonflights function as political blocs because each flight has been given a mandate, a culture and a way of seeing Azeroth. When they conflict, it's not just a personality dispute. It is a conflict between missions, methods and priorities.
The five flights and their domains
Life, magic, time, dream and earth/protection. This division of domains is the political basis of everything. Each flight was tasked with guarding an essential part of Azeroth's order.
How each flight lost or transformed its purpose
No flight arrives intact into the modern era. The blue goes into crisis with Malygos. The black becomes synonymous with corruption. The green carries the fissures of the Emerald Dream. The bronze lives under the shadow of possible futures. The red tries to protect life in a world that insists on destroying everything.
The Black Dragonflight as a recurring internal conflict
The black dragonflight is proof that even the structures chosen by the Titans can fail grotesquely. Created to guard the earth, it ends up linked to corruption, manipulation and existential threat.
The Accord and the new post-Dragonflight structure
After Dragonflight, the logic of the flights begins to depend less on automatic titanic power and more on political reconstruction, legitimacy and coexistence between broken legacies.
How this affects WotLK
Alexstrasza, Malygos, and Sartharion appear in Wrath as expressions of different draconic designs clashing with the war of the mortal world.
Minimum recommendation
- treat each flight as a political institution
- link each color to its original mandate
- see the crisis of the black dragonflight as the center of modern draconic collapse
- reread WotLK as a war in which dragons also compete for the fate of the world
- understand Dragonflight as rebuilding legitimacy
