From the end of TBC to the beginning of Wrath: why Northrend became the focus of the war

What happened at the end of The Burning Crusade?

TBC ended with the death of Illidan Tempestira in the Black Temple and then the defeat of Kil'jaeden on the Sunwell Plateau. The Legion was contained. Outland was under control.

For many, it felt like victory. But the Lich King was watching everything from Northrend—and enjoying every second of it.

Why did the Lich King wait so long?

The Lich King — Arthas, already fused with Ner'zhul — was never impulsive. He used entire TBC to strengthen his position:

  • Kept Naxxramas as a floating base of operations
  • Converted dead heroes into death knights (the first playable Death Knights)
  • Expanded Scourge quietly across Northrend
  • Tested and killed explorers to understand enemy forces

While players were in Outland, he was preparing.

The events that shifted attention to Northrend

Three factors made Northrend inevitable:

1. The necropolis invasion. Shortly after the end of TBC, Scourge necropolises attacked Orgrimmar, Stormwind and other capitals simultaneously. It was a clear sign: the Lich King decided it was time.

2. Bolvar Fordragon's mission. The Alliance sent forces to Northrend — including Bolvar Fordragon — to establish a foothold in Valiance Keep. The Horde responded with Warsong Hold. Both arrived for war.

3. The fall of Wrathgate. One of the most dramatic events of early WotLK, already in Dragonblight: in the Battle of Wrathgate, Putress's Royal Apothecary Society betrayed both factions with a new plague. Bolvar was killed (or almost). Politics between Horde and Alliance complicated everything.

Horde and Alliance movements in pre-Wrath

The two factions arrived in Northrend with similar goals but different approaches:

  • Alliance prioritized diplomacy with the Vrykul and control of coastal routes
  • Horde established aggressive presence in Borean Tundra with more military stance
  • Both competed for influence with the Kirin Tor in Dalaran — a city that became a neutral capital floating over Northrend

How this transition sets the tone of WotLK

TBC was about conquest in an alien land — Outland, distant and fragmented.

WotLK is different: it's about returning home to face the biggest mistake in Azeroth's recent history. Arthas was a hero. Scourge was born out of betrayal. Northrend is the territory of Azeroth.

This makes WotLK personal in a way that TBC never was. And that's why the narrative of the Azeroth Legacy server makes so much sense if set in this era.
