House Windrunner: the three sisters

The family

House Windrunner was one of the most respected families in Quel'Thalas. Alleria was the eldest of the sisters; Sylvanas, the middle one, was the most famous — Ranger-General of the elven people, the defender of Quel'Thalas. Alleria had left before Arthas's invasion. Vereesa was the youngest.

Three sisters, three completely different paths.

Alleria: the one that disappeared

Alleria Windrunner is the sister few know about because she spent decades outside of Azeroth — and, by her own perception, about a thousand years.

She was one of the heroes of the Second War — one of the elven archers who helped the Alliance defeat the original Horde. Afterwards, she entered the Dark Portal with Turalyon to pursue the remnants of the Horde on Draenor—and did not return.

The Portal exploded. Alleria and Turalyon were trapped in other dimensions for decades, while Azeroth continued to spin without them.

When she returned — in Legion — she was completely different: a Void power user, capable of using darkness as a weapon. She became the leader of the Void Elves and the first mortal to harness the power of the Void without being consumed by it.

In WotLK, Alleria does not appear directly — but her legacy is present in her younger sister.

Sylvanas: the one who died and came back different

Sylvanas was the Ranger General of Quel'Thalas — the highest position in the elven military hierarchy. When Arthas invaded during the Third War, she was the one who organized the defense.

She couldn't hold back. Quel'Thalas has fallen. Sunwell has been corrupted. Sylvanas died fighting Arthas — and was raised by him as a banshee, a weapon of war without a will of its own.

What happened next is what defines Sylvanas: she regained her will. Alone, without help, she freed herself from the Lich King's control.

And then he spent the rest of his existence preparing to destroy him.

In WotLK, Sylvanas is the Banshee Queen of the Forsaken and one of the most complex figures in the Horde. She has a personal interest in Icecrown Citadel that goes far beyond politics — it's revenge.

Vereesa: the one who stayed

Vereesa Windrunner is the youngest of the three and the least famous — but not for lack of ability.

She is married to Rhonin, one of the Alliance's most powerful mages and one of the leaders of the Kirin Tor. In Dalaran, during WotLK, Vereesa leads the Silver Covenant — the organization of High Elves within the city that opposes the presence of the Blood Elves.

While Sylvanas uses her past as fuel for hatred, Vereesa uses it as a reason to never trust the Sin'dorei. For her, the Blood Elves chose the Horde—the same faction that burned the forests of Quel'Thalas in the Second War.

What do the three represent

The Windrunners are a mirror of how the same trauma can create completely opposite destinies:

  • Alleria disappeared and returned transformed — she embraced the power of darkness but maintained her purpose
  • Sylvanas died and came back as something new — she survived but lost essential parts of herself in the process
  • Vereesa continued to be herself — and carries the weight of being the one who stayed, the one who lost her two sisters to destinies greater than her

In WotLK, only Sylvanas and Vereesa are actively present. But Alleria's absence—which Vereesa has felt for decades—is everywhere in Dalaran.
