How the Dungeon Finder Works and When to Start Using It

What is the Dungeon Finder

The Dungeon Finder (also called LFG — Looking for Group) is WotLK's automatic group formation system for dungeons. Instead of spamming trade chat looking for a tank or healer, you queue up, select which dungeon you want to run, and the system finds a group for you.

When all five players are found, everyone receives an invite and gets teleported directly to the dungeon entrance — regardless of where you are on the map.

What level can you start using it

The Dungeon Finder becomes available at level 15. From that point on, you can access the early-game dungeons.

The LFG interface can be found via the green shield icon on your default action bar, or by pressing I to open the Social Panel where it lives.

How the role system works

To join the queue, you need to select your role: Tank, Healer, or DPS. A dungeon group in WotLK is made up of:

  • 1 Tank
  • 1 Healer
  • 3 DPS

Typical queue time by role:

  • Tank: near-instant (30 seconds to 2 minutes)
  • Healer: fast (1 to 5 minutes)
  • DPS: variable (5 to 20+ minutes depending on time of day)

If your class can tank or heal, it's worth having a secondary spec and using the shorter-queue role when you want a faster run.

Specific dungeon or random?

You can queue in two ways:

Specific dungeon: You pick exactly which dungeon to run. Queue time may be longer, but you guarantee the content you want.

Random Dungeon: You let the system choose any dungeon compatible with your level. In exchange, you receive a bonus of emblems and gold upon completion — which makes random the best option most of the time for both leveling and endgame.

What happens when the group is ready

When the system finds all five players, a confirmation window appears for each. You have 1 minute to accept. If everyone accepts, the group is formed. If someone declines or lets the timer expire, the queue continues with the players who accepted.

After everyone accepts, you're teleported to the dungeon entrance. You can enter through the portal or use the "Enter Dungeon" button in the UI.

Tips for your first random dungeon

Let the group know you're new

There's nothing wrong with being a first-timer. Most groups are fine with new players who say so upfront. A quick "first time in this dungeon, any tips welcome" goes a long way.

Follow the tank

If you're DPS or healer, the basic rule is: the tank pulls, you follow. Don't attack before the tank has established threat — that pulls aggro and can cause a wipe.

Don't stop to read everything on your first run

You'll learn the boss mechanics over time. First time through, focus on basic mechanics and staying alive. You learn by doing.

Roll Need or Greed carefully

When an item drops, the system asks if you want "Need" (I can use this) or "Greed" (I could use it but don't need it). Roll Need only for items for your main spec. Rolling Need on everything is considered poor etiquette.

Dungeon Finder in endgame (level 80)

When you reach level 80, the Dungeon Finder becomes even more central to gameplay. Heroic dungeons unlock and become the primary source of Emblems of Heroism — the currency used to buy pre-raid gear and heirlooms.

The daily Random Heroic awards a bonus batch of emblems, making the daily queue essentially mandatory for any player focused on progression.

Summary

| Point | Detail | |-------|--------| | Minimum level | 15 | | Shortcut | I key → Social → LFG | | Group composition | 1 tank, 1 healer, 3 DPS | | Best option | Random Dungeon (extra bonus) | | Shortest queue | Tank > Healer > DPS |

The Dungeon Finder is one of the most useful tools in the game — both for leveling and endgame. Use it without hesitation from the start.
