What separates a good healer from a healer who only reacts?
In dungeons, bad healers usually live by putting out fires. Good healer prevents the fire from growing. The difference is in three things: priority, mana and positioning.
Healing well in WotLK isn't about trying to keep everyone full all the time. It's about keeping the group stable, surviving important damage and using your resources the way the dungeon really requires.
Healing priority on group and single target damage
Dungeon healing needs to follow a clear hierarchy.
When damage is concentrated
If the problem is with the tank or a specific target, your priority is to stabilize whoever is keeping the fight alive.
When damage spreads
When the whole group starts getting beaten up, you need to decide quickly:
- who is most at immediate risk
- who is out of position due to their own error
- who can still save themselves with personal resources
- where your healing generates the most value in the moment
Rule of thumb
- you
- tank, when the fight depends on him being alive
- critical target at real risk
- rest of the group depending on the danger
Dead healer doesn't heal anyone. Dead tank usually ends the pull. The rest comes later.
Mana management throughout the dungeon
Mana in dungeons is less about “not spending” and more about spending it right.
The most common mistake
Many people alternate between two extremes:
- cures too much and dries quickly
- hold on too much and let the situation get worse
Neither works well.
How to manage better
- use efficient healing when the fight is under control
- reserve strong response for real peaks
- don't try to fix every group positioning error with expensive spam
- take advantage of quiet windows to regain your rhythm
Healthy mana doesn't mean always ending up full. It means not collapsing before the dungeon decides to tighten.
Positioning for reach and safety
Healer who takes a bad position turns a simple dungeon into a fight for survival.
What you need to ensure
- comfortable reach on the tank
- group vision
- safe distance from cleave, frontal and pack chaos
- simple route to move if you need to
What to avoid
- get so far away that you lose range or reaction
- getting so close that it takes unnecessary mechanics
- get stuck in a bad corner
- heal while standing in a dangerous place due to “cast greed”
Good positioning is what leaves you healing clearly without becoming part of the problem.
Use of cooldowns at critical moments
Healer cooldowns in dungeons need to have a purpose.
Use when:
- the pack will clearly tighten
- the tank is entering a strong damage window
- the group made a mistake that can be absorbed
- the boss enters at a dangerous moment
Do not use on impulse when:
- the fight is still calm
- the damage does not justify
- you are fixing a problem that could be solved by positioning or utility
Cooldown was not designed to be saved until the end of the run. But it also doesn't exist to make up for any small oversight on the part of the group.
Heal errors that lead to wipe
1. Prioritize the wrong target
Spending too much healing on a secondary target while the core of the fight collapses is a classic mistake.
2. Cure in panic
Healer in panic spends bad mana and heals worse.
3. Relaxed positioning
Dying by stupid mechanics destroys dungeons faster than “low healing”.
4. Save cooldown until too late
Cooldown stopped is a dead resource.
5. Trying to fix everything yourself
There is damage that the group needs to avoid, not just receive healing from it.
6. Ignore dungeon rhythm
Your job is also to read when the run is accelerating too much or asking for more caution.
7. Forgetting about your own safety
If you die to heal someone in a bad position, the account usually doesn't close.
How to know if you are healing better
You are on the right track when:
- mana lasts better
- the group stabilizes faster after an error
- the tank feels safe without you living in panic
- you almost don't die from bad positioning
- the dungeon flows without a feeling of constant despair
Good healer is not the one that looks most dramatic. It's what makes the run feel controlled.
Minimum recommendation
To heal better in WotLK dungeons:
- prioritize the right target before just “healing a lot”
- use mana with intention
- Always play with range and safety in mind
- treat cooldown as a stability tool
- accept that part of the damage is the group's error, not your fault
Dungeoning gets much better when the healer stops reacting in fright and starts commanding chaos.
