Mag'har: the orcs who never drank the blood

•Lore•Brendo Arruda

The Mag'har are the orcs of Draenor who never drank the blood of the demon Mannoroth, because a disease kept them isolated in Nagrand. That is why they kept their brown skin and their old customs, and it is through them that the Horde finds its roots again in The Burning Crusade.

What does Mag'har mean?

Mag'har means "uncorrupted" in the orcish language. It is the name the orcs of Garadar came to use for themselves. Many players also call them brown orcs.

The difference is in the color. The orcs who drank Mannoroth's blood and used fel magic turned green. The Mag'har stayed away from all that, and their skin kept its natural color, brown or grayish.

The name is not only for people. Greatmother Geyah, the elder of the Mag'har, once used the word for Nagrand itself, the land that also escaped corruption.

Why didn't the Mag'har drink Mannoroth's blood?

Because of a plague. Years before the blood pact, a disease called the red pox spread among the clans of Draenor.

Ner'zhul asked the sick to stay in Nagrand. Garad, chieftain of the Frostwolf clan, took care of them and died of the disease a few weeks later. His mate, Geyah, did not abandon the sick. She set up a quarantine village and named it after her husband: Garadar.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Horde followed Gul'dan. The chieftains drank Mannoroth's blood, and Grom Hellscream was the first. Bloodlust took over the clans, and they crossed the Dark Portal to attack Azeroth.

Garadar stayed out of all of it. No one there drank the blood. The quarantine, which looked like a death sentence, ended up saving the souls of these orcs.

He helps Garrosh in Garadar. | | Dranosh Saurfang | A Mag'har raised in Garadar, son of Varok Saurfang. | | Provisioner Nasela | The quartermaster for Mag'har reputation. |

Garrosh Hellscream before the fame

Garrosh is the son of Grom Hellscream, of the Warsong clan. As a child, he caught the red pox and was sent to Garadar. He grew up there, far from his father.

In the novel Beyond the Dark Portal, Kargath Bladefist comes through Garadar looking for warriors. Garrosh asks about his father and wants to go with him. Kargath laughs at the Mag'har, calls them all weak and says they would do the Horde a favor by dying. Later, Geyah tells Garrosh there is no news of Grom, but she is sure the great warrior is still alive.

Garrosh grew up hearing only one part of the story: that his father was the first to drink the demon's blood. He was ashamed of it. He thought he carried cursed blood and would repeat Grom's mistakes.

The Mag'har in The Burning Crusade

When the Dark Portal reopens, the Horde reaches Outland and finds the Mag'har. The Horde player's first contact is in Hellfire Peninsula, at Mag'har Post. The quest "A Spirit Guide" takes the player there, led by a spirit wolf.

The heart of the people, though, is Garadar, in northern Nagrand. There the player meets:

  • Greatmother Geyah, old and very ill, in the main hall.
  • Garrosh, the military chief, sad and pessimistic.
  • Jorin Deadeye, who helps Garrosh keep the village standing.

Garrosh does not want to lead. He dreads Geyah's death because, when she is gone, the clan will expect him to take over. And he believes he will lead the Mag'har down the same dark path as his father.

The enemies of Nagrand

Life in Nagrand is not peaceful. The Warmaul ogres hold Warmaul Hill and the Laughing Skull Ruins, which once belonged to the Mag'har. The orcs of Kil'sorrow Fortress are agents of the Shadow Council. And the Murkblood, a group of Broken draenei, attacked Sunspring Post, a Mag'har outpost. About a thousand orcs died, and the bodies were dumped in the lake. Otonbu the Sage feared the massacre would set back peace with the Kurenai, the Broken who side with the Alliance, by years.

Thrall discovers his grandmother

The most important Mag'har story in TBC is a family reunion. Geyah is Durotan's mother. In other words, she is Thrall's grandmother. Thrall did not even know she was alive.

The quest chain shows it step by step:

  1. "A Visit With the Greatmother": Garrosh sends the player to speak with Geyah. She says she raised the clan's orphans and sick and that she is worried about Garrosh.
  2. Geyah prepares the player to speak with the spirits of the ancestors.
  3. "The Inconsolable Chieftain": Geyah sends the player to tell Garrosh about their victories. He answers wearily and hints that the player could lead the clan.
  4. "There Is No Hope": Garrosh says he is unfit to lead because of his cursed blood and asks the player to take the message to Geyah.
  5. "Thrall, Son of Durotan": Geyah sends the player to Orgrimmar with a message for her grandson. Thrall reacts: "I... I have a grandmother? She lives?"
  6. "Hero of the Mag'har": the player returns to Garadar, and Thrall goes there to reunite with Geyah.

Geyah confirms that Thrall is Durotan's heir and tells him the name his parents had chosen for him: Go'el.

The truth about Grom

Thrall then shows Garrosh what no one had told him. In a vision, Garrosh sees his father's end in the Third War.

Grom drank Mannoroth's blood a second time, in Ashenvale. But later, with Thrall's help, he faced the demon and killed him with the axe Gorehowl. Grom died there, but he freed the orcs from the curse of the blood.

For Garrosh, it was a turning point. His father was not only the orc who brought corruption. He was also the hero who broke it. Garrosh gains confidence, stops believing he is doomed to fail and rallies the Horde in Nagrand. Horde players there receive the Hellscream's Warsong buff.

Thrall saw pride and knowledge of the traditions in Garrosh. He convinced the young orc to leave Garadar and become one of his advisors.

What the Mag'har taught the Horde

Meeting the Mag'har moved Thrall. The New Horde was born in the internment camps of Lordaeron, far from Draenor. Many young orcs did not know the old culture.

The Mag'har kept that culture. They follow a shamanistic tradition focused on survival. Order in the clan is kept through ritual combat and personal honor. Even Garadar's buildings look like those of the orcs in the first Warcraft, because the Mag'har never changed their style.

After the meeting, the Mag'har join the Horde and teach the other orcs what the past was like. A Mag'har from Outland, Aggralan, later becomes Thrall's wife.

The Mag'har in Wrath of the Lich King

Garrosh was the first Mag'har to enter Orgrimmar. In Wrath, he is already Overlord of the Warsong Offensive, the Horde's main army in Northrend, based at Warsong Hold in the Borean Tundra.

Other Mag'har came with him. The most famous is Dranosh Saurfang. The elders of Garadar hid him as a child from the orc warlocks. As an adult, he went to Azeroth, reunited with his father, Varok Saurfang, and the two joined the Warsong Offensive. Dranosh died at the Wrathgate and was raised as Deathbringer Saurfang.

The pride Thrall saw in Garrosh has another side. Years later, he becomes warchief and leads the Horde down a very dark path. That part is in Corrupted Garrosh and the Siege of Orgrimmar.

What about the playable Mag'har?

The playable Mag'har (the Battle for Azeroth allied race) are something else. They come from the alternate Draenor of Warlords of Draenor, led by Geya'rah. They do not exist in WotLK. Their story is in WoW History: Warlords of Draenor.

Where to see it in WotLK

The server is WotLK 3.3.5a, so Outland is complete, with the original quests. The Thrall and Geyah chain was removed in Cataclysm, but in 3.3.5a it exists.

  • Mag'har Post (Hellfire Peninsula): the Horde's first contact, through the quest "A Spirit Guide". The chain starts with "The Assassin" in Thrallmar.
  • Garadar (Nagrand, 56, 34): Greatmother Geyah (56.7, 34.3), Garrosh and Jorin Deadeye. Start with "A Visit With the Greatmother".
  • Orgrimmar: Thrall, to turn in "Thrall, Son of Durotan" and pick up "Hero of the Mag'har".
  • The Mag'har reputation: Horde only. It starts at Unfriendly. It goes up with quests in Garadar, by killing ogres and by turning in Obsidian Warbeads (10 per turn-in). The quartermaster Provisioner Nasela sells the riding talbuks and the Mag'har tabard. The Alliance has the equivalent reputation with the Kurenai.
  • Warsong Hold (Borean Tundra): Garrosh as Overlord in Northrend.
  • Icecrown Citadel: Deathbringer Saurfang, the Mag'har Dranosh raised by the Lich King.
