Obsidian Sanctum for Beginners: How It Works and Why It's Still Worth It
OS is still an excellent raid for learning to play in a group
Obsidian Sanctum seems too small to be taken seriously by many people. This is exactly the error. Because it is short, direct and with few distractions, it quickly exposes the basic problems of any group: tank without control, DPS without focus, healer reacting late and people who ignore simple instructions.
For a beginner, this is great. You enter, quickly understand the objective and learn notions of priority, positioning and execution without the fatigue of a long raid.
How the raid works
The structure is simple: the central objective is to kill Sartharion. Before that, the party can deal with the three external drakes linked to the encounter: Tenebron, Shadron and Vesperon.
In practice, there are three most common ways to raid:
- Zero live drakes: the simplest and safest version for beginner groups
- A live drake: increases the demand and requires more coordination
- Two or three live drakes: completely changes the difficulty and is no longer an entry raid
If the idea is to learn, go in with the correct mindset: OS for a beginner is Sartharion without drakes.
What to prepare before entering
Gear and group profile
You don't need crazy gear to clean base OS, but you do need a minimum of stability.
The ideal entry group is:
- tanks that know how to change focus quickly if there are adds
- healers with enough mana to sustain raid damage without panicking
- DPS that can hit and leave the danger zone at the same time
Consumables and setup
Enter with the basics ready:
- bottle or elixir compatible with its function
- main stat food
- weapons, gems and enchantments minimally up to date
- boss timer addons if possible
- short and objective communication on Discord or voice chat
The biggest mistake of new groups is treating OS as “raid so easy that you don't need to prepare anything”. That's where the silly wipes start.
Key mechanics for beginners
1. Lava wave
This is the mechanic that kills the most bad players in base OS. The arena is surrounded by lava and Sartharion summons waves that cross the platform.
The beginning player makes mistakes for two reasons:
- takes time to read where the wave is coming from
- continues casting or beating as if he had time left
Here the rule is simple: see the wave, reposition before making any other decision.
2. Add control
Even in basic mode, elements may appear that divert attention from the boss. The tank needs to pull, and the DPS needs to focus when the raid leader orders to change targets.
3. Boss positioning
Sartharion is not an encounter for improvised tanking. The more poorly positioned it is, the greater the chance that melee will lose uptime, the healer will be poorly positioned and half the group will take avoidable damage.
Errors that cause the most wipes
Wave ignored
It's the classic. One player takes the wave, dies, and the group loses damage, buff, healing, or control.
Healer standing in a bad place
Poorly positioned healers often choose between two bad options: heal and die, or survive and let someone fall.
DPS hitting wrong target
In a beginner group, someone always appears trying to “optimize parse” while the meeting calls for basic execution.
Pull without combining plan
If no one said before who pulls, where the tank turns the boss and which side to use to escape the wave, the wipe has already started before the first hit.
How the raid works in practice
OS is worth it because it delivers three things at the same time:
- mechanics reading training
- chance of useful loot in early progression
- clear quickly when the group already knows what they are doing
She is a good raid for teaching discipline. And discipline in raids is worth more than gear in many casual guilds.
OS Readiness Checklist
| Item | Confirm before entering | |---|---| | Strategy | group will do without live drakes | | Positioning | tank knows where to hold Sartharion | | Main mechanics | everyone understood how to escape the wave | | Setup | consumables, enchantments and organized bars | | Communication | focus of adds and short calls combined |
Minimum recommendation
If you're getting into raiding now, use OS as serious training:
- make the version without live drakes
- combine positioning and escape route before pulling
- Treat lava wave as absolute priority
- Covers Target Focus and Execution Discipline
- Only increase the difficulty after the group clears without chaos
