Are Tailoring and Jewelcrafting really that similar in Warlock?
At a raw level, both are in the strong group of professions for Warlock in WotLK Classic. Icy Veins lists Tailoring and Jewelcrafting among the best options for Affliction, Demo and Destro, almost always alongside Engineering.
But the practical difference between them is very real:
- Tailoring tends to seem more “throughput”
- Jewelcrafting tends to seem more “consistent”
Therefore, the right choice depends less on dry ranking and more on how you play Warlock.
What Tailoring brings to the table
1. Lots of direct value for caster cloth
Tailoring works very well with caster because it delivers a natural offensive gain aligned with the role of the class.
2. Excellent for PvE
If your main focus is serious raiding and dungeoneering, Tailoring is a very easy profession to defend.
3. Good feeling of reward in progression
Warlock feels its value well, especially in the context of pure performance.
Where it shines the most:
- PvE
- parse/throughput
- performance focused player
Where does it lose relative strength:
- who wants totally predictable bonuses
- who values stability more than peak
What Jewelcrafting brings to the table
1. Stable and predictable bonus
Jewelcrafting is the type of profession that almost never lets you down. It doesn't rely so much on window feel or proc.
2. Very good flexibility
If you mix PvE, PvP and gear transition, it tends to be very comfortable.
3. Easier to justify in hybrid setups
For those who don't want the “most flashy” profession, but want a profession that is always correct, Jewelcrafting is excellent.
Where it shines the most:
- hybrid setup
- player who likes consistency
- those who want less friction in maintaining performance
Difference in cost and maintenance
Tailoring
- it is usually chosen much more for performance than for comfort
- may be simpler in end-use logic, but the path to get there is not always cheap
Jewelcrafting
- it also has a cost, but the feeling of return is more stable
- better conversation with those who like to adjust gear and maintain flexibility
Neither of them is “cheap” just for existing. What changes is the type of value that each one returns.
When each option delivers more value
Tailoring pays off more when:
- its focus is PvE
- you want strong throughput
- your second profession already covers the most utilitarian part
- you accept a more performance-oriented choice
Jewelcrafting pays off most when:
- you want clean and predictable bonuses
- plays more than one type of content
- prefers stability over peak sensation
- want a profession that remains good at practically any stage
Objective choice guide
Objective: competitive raid
Tailoring tends to make more sense.
Goal: Stable PvE + some PvP
Jewelcrafting is usually more comfortable.
Objective: Main warlock without too much stress
Jewelcrafting may fit better.
Objective: min-max throughput
Tailoring usually takes.
So which one pays more?
If you are PvE-first
Tailoring.
If you are a hybrid
Jewelcrafting.
If you want the safest answer to almost any routine
Jewelcrafting.
If you want to extract more from the “damage above all” side
Tailoring.
Minimum recommendation
For Warlock:
- Tailoring yields more for PvE focus and throughput
- Jewelcrafting yields more for stability and hybrid routine
- both are really good
- the right choice depends more on your objective than on the raw ranking
If the question is “which one would I do without regretting it?”, I would say:
- Tailoring for raid Warlock
- Jewelcrafting for more versatile Warlock
