What makes a fish worth farming?
In Northrend, good fish is not just “the most expensive”. This is what fits well into at least one of these groups:
- strong raid food
- group feast
- alchemy or other collateral use
- raw sale with constant output
The best guide to thinking about this is to remember that some fish enter consumables very repeatedly. This holds demand for longer.
Fish with the highest market value
Dragonfin Angelfish
It is one of the most obvious targets because it goes into:
- Dragonfin Filet
- Blackened Dragonfin
In other words, it feeds individual foods that are very relevant to various specs.
Musselback Sculpin
Glacial Salmon
Nettlefish
These three shine because they enter Fish Feast together, WotLK's great collective buff food.
Pygmy Suckerfish
It has appeal outside of Cooking due to its relationship with Alchemy and is usually a fish remembered when it comes to gold due to its indirect usefulness.
Farm spots by objective and time
Wowhead's Cooking Materials farm guide cites Dragonblight as an efficient location for Dragonfin Angelfish, and the Fishing guide reinforces the importance of choosing target fish rather than simply fishing in any water.
If the goal is Strength/Agility food
focus on Dragonfin Angelfish
If the objective is raid feast
focus on fish that enter the Fish Feast
If the objective is parallel income
consider markets where Pygmy Suckerfish or raw fish are rotating well
Schedules and routes with better performance
Fishing pays more when you reduce friction, not when you try to “invent the best theory”.
Good session
- short route
- spot with clear target
- less zone switching
- less time organizing bags and auctions in the middle of the farm
Better hours
There is no universal magic time, but it usually helps:
- farm when the spot is less competitive
- sell when consumable demand is hottest, usually around raid reset and progression nights
Farm errors that reduce profit
1. Fishing without target fish
2. Ignore real server demand
3. Changing routes too soon
4. Trying to sell everything processed
5. Do not separate personal farming from gold farming
Session checklist for efficient farming
Before you start:
- Which fish do I want?
- Is it to be sold raw, cooked or stored?
- Does my spot meet this objective?
- Do I have time for a short or long session?
- Is it worth selling today or waiting for a better window?
Minimum recommendation
In Northrend, the fish that are most often worth your time are:
- Dragonfin Angelfish
- Musselback Sculpin
- Glacial Salmon
- Nettlefish
- Pygmy Suckerfish, when the secondary market helps
Good farmed fish is what comes out of the water with the right destination — and not what you hope to discover later.
