The Best Professions for Leveling — What to Pick Right from the Start
Profession choice is a long-term decision
Choosing a profession at the start of the game seems simple — but the decision impacts your gold, your time, and your power in endgame. This guide focuses on the leveling period (1 to 80) and answers the question: which professions actually help while you're leveling, instead of getting in the way?
The fundamental split: gathering vs crafting
In WotLK, professions fall into two categories:
Gathering professions:
- Mining
- Herbalism
- Skinning
Crafting professions:
- Blacksmithing, Engineering, Jewelcrafting
- Alchemy, Inscription, Enchanting
- Tailoring, Leatherworking
The practical difference during leveling: gathering professions generate gold while you level. Crafting professions usually consume gold to skill up and deliver more value at endgame.
The best combinations for leveling
1. Herbalism + Alchemy
Why it works: You collect herbs while doing quests, and Alchemy turns those herbs into useful potions for leveling itself. Healing potions, speed elixirs, and buff flasks are all craftable from what you gather.
Passive bonus: Herbalism gives a skill called Lifeblood — a quick-use HoT (heal over time) that saves lives in tight situations.
Best for: Any caster or healer class. Especially good for Warlock, Mage, and Priest.
2. Mining + Engineering
Why it works: Mining directly feeds Engineering — you gather what you need to craft. Engineering offers gadgets, bombs, and other items that help during leveling, and is one of the strongest professions at endgame.
Downside: Engineering is expensive to level and crafted items have limited uses. Don't expect to make gold from Engineering during leveling.
Best for: Warriors, Hunters, and Rogues planning to play endgame PvE or PvP. Engineering has a huge impact on competitive builds.
3. Skinning + Leatherworking
Why it works: Skinning is the easiest gathering profession of all — you skin mobs you're already killing during quests. No special route required.
Downside: Leatherworking is mainly useful for classes wearing leather or mail (Druid, Hunter, Rogue, Shaman). For other classes, the value is lower.
Best for: Druid, Hunter, Rogue, or Shaman who want a simple, practical combination.
4. Herbalism + Mining (pure gathering)
Why it works: If you want to maximize gold during leveling without worrying about crafting, this is the most profitable combination. You simply collect everything that appears and sell it on the Auction House.
Downside: You give up the endgame bonuses that crafting professions offer. At level 80, you'll need to swap one of the gathering professions for something more relevant to your class — and that costs gold and time.
Best for: Any class. Especially useful for players who need capital fast for mount, gear, and heirlooms.
What to avoid early on
Enchanting as your first crafting profession
Enchanting seems appealing for being universally useful — but to level it, you constantly need to disenchant items, which means spending gold buying gear to destroy. It's an expensive and frustrating profession for players starting without resources.
If you want Enchanting, consider leveling it after you've accumulated gold in endgame.
Jewelcrafting during leveling
Jewelcrafting delivers excellent endgame value (exclusive gems for your own character are very strong), but it's expensive to level and craftable items during leveling don't justify the investment.
Save JC for when you have an alt or when your main already has gold reserves.
Blacksmithing without Mining
Blacksmithing without Mining is one of the most expensive profession combos in the game. Ores are pricey on the Auction House and you'll need massive amounts of material to reach level 450. Always pair BS with Mining.
Secondary professions: First Aid is mandatory
Regardless of what you choose as primary professions, First Aid is free and mandatory. With First Aid, you craft bandages that heal out of combat — essential for classes without self-healing.
Bandages are especially valuable for:
- Rogue, Warrior, and Hunter — who frequently take damage and need to recover HP quickly between pulls
Cooking and Fishing are also useful secondary professions, but not a priority during leveling.
Recommendation by player profile
| Profile | Recommended combination | |---------|------------------------| | Wants gold fast | Herbalism + Mining | | Wants utility while leveling | Herbalism + Alchemy | | Wants strong endgame (DPS) | Mining + Engineering | | Wants strong endgame (melee) | Mining + Blacksmithing | | Starting from scratch | Skinning + Herbalism or any double gathering |
One simple rule
If you don't have gold saved up and are starting from zero, pick two gathering professions. You'll accumulate gold while leveling, and at 80 you swap one of them for the crafting profession that makes most sense for your class.
There's no perfect combination for everyone — there's the right combination for your playstyle. The mistake is having no profession at all, or picking crafting without the gathering to feed it.
