"Third War" series — Third War #3. The story of Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, from Medivh's prophecy to the Battle of Mount Hyjal. The episodes are listed in order at the end of the post.
The Culling of Stratholme is the moment the Warcraft 3 human campaign turns into tragedy. Arthas reaches the city too late: the tainted grain has already been handed out, and the people have already eaten it. To stop Mal'Ganis from turning them into undead, the prince decides to kill them all first. Uther refuses. Jaina walks away. And the Order of the Silver Hand breaks apart right there, at the city gates.
The gates of Stratholme
It's early morning. Uther, Jaina and the knights of the Order of the Silver Hand reach Arthas's camp outside Stratholme.
Arthas explains what he has found. The grain has been delivered. The citizens are infected. It doesn't matter if they still look healthy: sooner or later, they will all rise as servants of the Scourge. His conclusion is cold: "This entire city must be purged."
To Uther, that is unthinkable. He was the first paladin of the Silver Hand, the order created to protect the people of Lordaeron. Killing civilians who are still breathing goes against everything he taught the prince.
"You are not my king yet"
Arthas won't accept the refusal. He reminds Uther that he is heir to the throne and calls the disobedience treason.
Uther's answer is one of the most famous lines in Warcraft III: "You are not my king yet, boy! Nor would I obey that command even if you were!"
Arthas then relieves Uther of command and suspends the paladins from duty. The knights turn their backs and leave. It's the break between the prince and the order that shaped him. Arthas goes on with the soldiers who remain loyal to him.

Jaina walks away
Jaina stays behind for a moment. She looks at Arthas and says: "I'm sorry, Arthas. I can't watch you do this." Then she follows the paladins.
It's the end of their relationship. Jaina will carry this scene for the rest of her life, and the path she takes from here leads to Kalimdor.
The contest with Mal'Ganis
Arthas enters the city. The citizens begin to turn in front of him, and Mal'Ganis teleports in. "As you can see, your people are now mine."
Arthas answers with the line that sums up his decision: "Better that these people die by my hand than serve as your slaves in death!"
The chapter becomes a race. Arthas has to destroy the houses of the infected citizens and kill one hundred zombies before Mal'Ganis gathers one hundred zombies for the Scourge. Every citizen Arthas doesn't reach in time becomes a soldier for the enemy.
When Arthas wins the contest, he challenges the dreadlord. Mal'Ganis doesn't fight. He teleports away and leaves an invitation: "Gather your forces and meet me in the arctic land of Northrend. It is there that we shall settle the score."

Paths that split
Three days later, Jaina walks through the smoking ruins of Stratholme. Survivors are burning the dead. Uther arrives looking for Arthas and the fleet.
Arthas has already left. Jaina says he went to Northrend to hunt Mal'Ganis and that she warned him it looked like a trap. Uther goes to inform King Terenas.
Then the Prophet appears to Jaina. He says the young prince will find only death in the frozen north, because his passions will be his undoing. Jaina defends Arthas, but the Prophet doesn't argue. He says she must lead her people west, to the ancient lands of Kalimdor.
What this changes in the story
The Culling is the point of no return in Arthas's fall. Until now, he was an impatient hero. After Stratholme, he is a prince who killed his own people and broke the two strongest bonds he had: his mentor and the woman he loved.
The scene still divides fans today. Was Arthas wrong? The citizens really were going to become undead. But the way he made the decision, without listening to anyone, shows what was coming next. Mal'Ganis knew that. The challenge in Northrend was the bait.
In WotLK, the story comes back to this moment. In the dungeon The Culling of Stratholme, the player follows Arthas through the city and makes sure the Culling happens as it did in the original story.
