To understand Undermine, you need to stop thinking about “government” and start thinking about cartel
Goblin politics revolves around contract, influence, sabotage, debt, and opportunity. The cartels are the real power structure of the goblin world, and Undermine only makes sense when you understand that.
The great cartels
In Undermine, the four big names are Bilgewater, Blackwater, Steamwheedle and the Venture Company. Cartels function as economic and political blocs with different specialties, networks and areas of influence. These are not innocent trade guilds. They are centers of power with the ability to impose will.
How power is exercised
Contract, sabotage and mercenaries. The cartel does not need to conquer territory like a traditional kingdom. It can buy, blackmail, sabotage or outsource violence.
Trade Prince is not a hereditary title
It is legitimacy built by accumulated power, not blood. This creates unstable succession, constant contention and politics based on immediate results.
Historical rivalries between cartels
Cartels compete all the time, but they almost never let the dispute turn into total destruction of the system, because they all depend on a certain level of Undermine functioning.
What The War Within reveals
As Undermine gains greater prominence, it becomes clearer that the city is its own political ecosystem, governed by economic terror, ambition, and radical pragmatism.
Minimum recommendation
- see each cartel as a political bloc, not just a commercial one
- treat contracts and sabotage as normal instruments of power
- understand Trade Prince as a position conquered, not inherited
- reread Undermine as a city sustained by managed competition
- use goblin politics to see profit as a worldview
