Does Shaman need to choose profession by spec?
Yes. Although there is a strong core of professions in WotLK, the Shaman changes a lot depending on the spec. Elemental is caster DPS, Enhancement is melee DPS, and Restoration is healer; This completely changes the type of value that each profession delivers in practice. The class hubs themselves remind us that the three specs play very differently.
Furthermore, the Elemental guide at Icy Veins provides a useful detail: Engineering and Tailoring appear as the strongest and most flexible choices, while Jewelcrafting is excellent before epic gems and Blacksmithing becomes much more viable after they enter the game.
Recommended pairs per spec
Elemental Shaman
Best overall profile:
- Engineering + Tailoring
- Engineering + Jewelcrafting as a stable alternative
Elemental wants caster damage, a good burst window and a profession that goes well with spell power/haste scaling.
Enhancement Shaman
Best overall profile:
- Engineering + Jewelcrafting
- Engineering + Blacksmithing in setups that value socket flexibility more
Enhance talks better with professions that help shape gear and melee DPS windows.
Restoration Shaman
Best overall profile:
- Engineering + Jewelcrafting
- or Engineering + Leatherworking, depending on the profile and the type of value you want to extract
The rest want utility, consistency and the ability to respond well to encounters and pressure.
Difference in priority by function
Elemental
Values caster throughput and offensive scaling.
Enhancement
Values better stat adjustment, physical pressure and melee DPS consistency.
Restoration
Values utility, stability and good response in long encounters.
Practical gain in PvE and PvP
PvE
- Elemental tends to love classic caster professions
- Enhancement benefits greatly from combinations that help the melee profile
- Resto values usefulness and consistency
PvP
In PvP, Engineering grows in value for all specs because Shaman really likes utility, response time and active tool.
Cost-benefit of the main options
Stronger / more meta
- Engineering + strong duo per spec
More stable
- Jewelcrafting as a second profession
More technical and phase dependent
- Blacksmithing gains greater relevance when sockets and gems weigh more
Recommendation by player profile
| Profile | Best duo | |---|---| | Elemental PvE | Engineering + Tailoring | | Hybrid elemental | Engineering + Jewelcrafting | | Enhancement PvE | Engineering + Jewelcrafting | | Enhancement with focus on gear adjustment | Engineering + Blacksmithing | | Restoration PvE | Engineering + Jewelcrafting or Engineering + Leatherworking |
Minimum recommendation
- Elemental leans more toward Engineering + Tailoring
- Enhancement usually prefers Engineering + Jewelcrafting
- Restoration works great with Engineering + Jewelcrafting
- Blacksmithing and Leatherworking are more specific choices per function/phase
Shaman is not a class to automatically choose a profession. The spec changes the type of value that really matters too much.
