Is leatherworking still a good profession for Shamans?
It remains a respectable profession, but today it doesn't automatically win the conversation for every spec. What decides the value of Leatherworking in Shaman is simple: which spec you play and what you expect from the profession.
In general:
- for caster and healer, it can still be solid
- for melee, it competes with more flexible or stronger options in the meta
- for those who want a high performance ceiling, Engineering continues to steal the show
Benefits of Leatherworking for Shaman
1. Stable bonus
LW delivers value without relying as much on active use as Engineering.
2. Good coherence with more stable profiles
Players who don't want a “button-filled” profession tend to like it more.
3. Still acceptable for healer and certain PvE profiles
It is not a dead profession. It just doesn't dominate the conversation like it used to.
In which specs is the return higher?
Restoration Shaman
This is where Leatherworking makes the most sense today. Rest values stability, consistency and bonuses that fit well with healer throughput. Icy Veins' own Restoration guide reinforces the utility profile and area/target healing that combines well with stable gains.
Elemental Shaman
It can work, but it usually loses its luster for Tailoring, Jewelcrafting or Engineering depending on the context.
Enhancement Shaman
It's the spec where LW seems less special compared to alternatives like Engineering, Jewelcrafting or Blacksmithing.
Comparison with popular alternatives
Versus Engineering
Engineering offers more utility, more ceiling and more real impact feel.
Versus Jewelcrafting
JC tends to be more universal and easier to justify at any stage.
Versus Tailoring
For Elemental, Tailoring tends to work better with the caster profile.
Versus Blacksmithing
For Enhancement, Blacksmithing may be more interesting in gear fine-tuning scenarios.
Endgame cost and maintenance
Leatherworking is not a cost-free profession, but the big point is another: you need to ask if its return is really greater than that of alternatives for your specific Shaman.
It's worth more when:
- you want stability
- your spec extracts passive value well
- your routine does not require the maximum from Engineering
It is worth less when:
- you're min-maxing
- your spec matches better with the strongest profession in the meta
- your account is already set up for pure performance
When to maintain or change profession
Keep if:
- you play Restoration
- your routine is stable
- the profession is already done and continues to serve you well
- you don't need an absolute maximum ceiling
Think about switching if:
- your focus has changed to more competitive endgame
- you migrated to a spec that takes less advantage of LW
- Engineering or JC would start to yield more in practice
Minimum recommendation
- Leatherworking is still worth it for Restoration Shaman
- for Elemental, she already needs to compete more
- for Enhancement, it tends to waste more space
- If the goal is maximum performance, compare with Engineering and Jewelcrafting before deciding
Leatherworking is still good. It just stopped being an automatic response.
