Between the Wars #4: Escape from Durnholde

•Lore•Brendo Arruda

"Between the Wars" series — Between the Wars #4. The years between the end of Draenor and Warcraft III, from the internment camps to the rebirth of the Horde. The episodes are listed in order at the end of the post.

The escape from Durnholde is the moment Thrall stops being Blackmoore's property. In just a few months, the gladiator who had only known a cell finds the camps, a rebel warchief and his own father's clan. And he discovers a power the orcs had forgotten: shamanism.

The last straw

Thrall lost a fight in the arena. Blackmoore, furious, beat him brutally.

After that, Thrall wrote to Taretha. He told her he wanted to escape.

The night of the escape

Taretha made the plan. She let the animals loose and set the camp on fire, causing chaos in Durnholde. In the middle of it, she left Thrall a large cloak so he could walk out the front gate without being recognized. Outside, in a cave, she was waiting for him with supplies.

She could have run away with him. She didn't want to. She stayed for her family, and that will cost her dearly in the next episode.

The Old Hillsbrad Foothills dungeon shows a version of that night. In it, the Infinite Dragonflight tries to change history, and the player helps Thrall escape so everything happens as it should.

What Thrall found in the camps

Free at last, Thrall went looking for his own people. What he saw was the lethargy: orcs standing still, with no will, no rage, no hope. They weren't the monsters from human books. They were broken prisoners.

He ended up captured and taken to a camp run by Lorin Remka. There he met an orc named Kelgar.

Kelgar told Thrall about Gul'dan's betrayal and how warlock magic had corrupted the orcs. He said the old ways were better. He was the first to talk about shamanism as the cure his people needed. And he gave him a name: Grom Hellscream, the only chieftain who still thought about the old ways.

Thrall escaped again, with Kelgar taking on the guards to distract them. Blackmoore demoted Remka for the failure.

Grom Hellscream and the Warsong

Grom and the Warsong clan had been hiding in the forests of Lordaeron for years. The demonic curse left Grom weak and worn down, but he kept resisting. The clan was shrinking, and the youngest and weakest didn't survive.

Grom was impressed by the young orc's courage, strength and mercy. He took Thrall in and taught him the orcish language and the ways of their people. He also gave him a clue: by the look of him, Thrall must belong to the Frostwolf clan, exiled long ago.

When the humans hunting Thrall got too close, he decided to leave so he wouldn't put the Warsong at risk. Grom gave him his own necklace as a sign of trust.

The Frostwolves

Thrall climbed the Alterac Mountains looking for the clan. In the end, the Frostwolves themselves rescued him.

The Frostwolves were different from the other orcs. The clan was exiled after Durotan challenged the Horde's leadership and refused Mannoroth's blood. Because they lived far away, they were never locked in the camps. In exile, the old shaman Drek'Thar abandoned the warlock path, returned to shamanism and brought the white wolves of Alterac to the clan's side.

Thrall gave Drek'Thar the torn cloth he had been found in. That's how the elder discovered the truth: this orc raised by humans was Durotan's son.

The way of the shaman

Drek'Thar didn't accept Thrall right away. First he tested his humility and his pride, two things a shaman has to balance. The Spirit of Fire had already shown that the young orc had potential.

Thrall was accepted into the clan. A white wolf named Snowsong chose him as her lifelong companion, in a partnership of equals.

In a remote place in the mountains, Thrall went through his initiation. He made friends with the spirits of the elements and became the first new shaman since Gul'dan's corruption.

It was the answer Antonidas couldn't find. The cure for the lethargy wasn't arcane magic. It was the spirit.

What this changes in the story

The escape turns Thrall into a bridge between two worlds. He thinks like a human strategist, was taught by Grom to be an orc and was shaped by Drek'Thar as a shaman.

This is also where the core idea of the new Horde is born: go back to shamanism and leave fel magic behind. The shamans the player sees in WoW, across the whole Horde, come from this turning point.
