Broken Shore and the return of the Burning Legion

The great invasion begins with a defeat

The strength of Legion's opening lies precisely in the fact that Azeroth does not enter the war triumphant. Broken Shore is a disaster.

Gul'dan and the Tomb of Sargeras

Gul'dan's presence in the Broken Isles comes directly from the final stretch of Warlords. Your goal is clear:

  • use the Tomb of Sargeras
  • open the way for the Legion
  • turn the cursed coast into a beachhead for full invasion

Varian's death and the rise of Sylvanas

Military failure becomes a symbolic tragedy with the death of Varian Wrynn. On the Horde side, Vol'jin is mortally wounded and names Sylvanas Windrunner as the new Warchief.

This point is important because the succession itself is already fraught with controversy.

The division between Horde and Alliance

On the Alliance side, many people interpret the Horde's withdrawal as abandonment. On the Horde side, withdrawal appears as a necessity given the collapse of the line. This fuels deep distrust at precisely the worst possible time.

Final summary

After being sent to Azeroth, Gul'dan uses the Tomb of Sargeras to pave the way for the Burning Legion's return. The Alliance and Horde launch a preemptive offensive on the Broken Shore, but the campaign fails disastrously. Varian Wrynn dies, Vol'jin receives a mortal wound and Sylvanas' succession as Warchief takes place under extreme tension. In terms of lore, this moment marks Azeroth's entry into a war on an all-out cosmic scale.

This is why Broken Shore is still going strong: it doesn't open Legion with hope — it opens with defeat, grief and the clear feeling that the entire world has become smaller in the face of the return of the Burning Legion.
