Complete WoW Chronology: From Beginning to WotLK

Complete WoW Chronology: From Beginning to WotLK

•Lore•Brendo Arruda

The history of WoW is long, fragmented into games, books and expansions. If you want to understand what's going on in Northrend — and why the Lich King is who he is — this is the place to start.

Each era below has a link to the full post with the detailed history.

Era 1 — The Creation of Azeroth

Billions of years ago

The Titans roamed the universe shaping planets. When they arrived in what would become Azeroth, they found a raw world — and they ordered it. They created the stone races (ancestors of the dwarves), saw the Well of Eternity form in the wound left by the removal of Y'Shaarj, and left guardians in place before leaving.

But during this process, entities from the void — the Old Gods — burrowed into the planet like parasites. The Titans attempted to remove them and found it impossible without destroying Azeroth. The solution was to imprison them in deep chambers. An imperfect solution that WotLK revisits in Ulduar.

Era 2 — The War of the Ancients

~10,000 years before WoW

The dominant civilization of Azeroth were the Night Elves (Kaldorei), who drained the Well of Eternity without limits. This signal drew the Burning Legion across the Nether.

Queen Azshara and the Highborne opened the doors to the Legion willingly — believing Sargeras worthy to rule alongside them. The resistance led by Malfurion Stormrage and Tyrande Whisperwind won, but at an enormous cost: the Well of Eternity was destroyed, breaking the original continent into several pieces. It's the Great Sundering — the event that created the map of Azeroth as we know it.

Era 3 — Rise and fall of the Night Elves

After the Sundering

The survivors split: the loyal Night Elves abandoned arcane magic and embraced druidism. The exiled Highborne eventually founded Quel'Thalas — becoming the High Elves, ancestors of the Blood Elves.

Azshara and her closest followers were swallowed by the ocean and transformed into Naga by N'zoth.

Illidan Stormrage, who had secretly created a second Well of Eternity, was imprisoned by Malfurion. The Dragon Aspects planted the World Tree Nordrassil over the lake to seal it.

Era 4 — The Orcs on Draenor

Centuries before WoW

In another world — Draenor — Orcs lived organized in clans, with shamanic culture and connection with the spirits of the world. Until Kil'jaeden of the Burning Legion manipulates Ner'zhul and then Gul'dan to corrupt them.

The Orcs drank the blood of the demon Mannoroth, gaining supernatural strength in exchange for sanity. Draenor began to die. Gul'dan's solution was to open the Dark Portal to Azeroth.

Era 5 — First and Second Wars

~30–25 years before WoW

Orcs invaded Azeroth through the Dark Portal. Stormwind fell in the First War. Humans fled to Lordaeron and formed the Alliance, which won the Second War. The surviving Orcs were interned in camps.

Thrall was born in this era — son of Durotan (Frostwolf Clan), one of the few leaders who refused the blood of Mannoroth. He grew up a slave, escaped, and rebuilt the Horde based on honor and shamanism.

Era 6 — Warcraft III and the Third War

~5 years before WoW

The biggest conflict before WotLK. Arthas, prince of Lordaeron, went to Northrend to fight the Scourge, burned his ships, raised Frostmourne — and lost his soul. He returned to Lordaeron, killed his own father, and marched into destruction.

Quel'Thalas was destroyed. The Night Elves, Alliance, and Horde joined forces in Hyjal to stop Archimonde. The war ended with Arthas ascending the Frozen Throne as the Lich King — merging with Ner'zhul, the spirit imprisoned there since the Second War.

Era 7 — WoW Classic

Year 0 of the game

Five years after the Third War, Azeroth is trying to rebuild itself. Stormwind under reconstruction. Orgrimmar newly founded. The Forsaken — undead who escaped the control of the Scourge — join the Horde as a controversial member.

Threats emerge: Ragnaros in Molten Core, Nefarian in Blackwing Lair, C'thun in Ahn'Qiraj, and Kel'Thuzad in Naxxramas. The Dark Portal reopens at the end of Classic — starting TBC.

Era 8 — The Burning Crusade

+2 years

The Portal leads to Outland — what was left of Draenor after Ner'zhul destroyed it. Illidan Stormrage controls the region with Vashj and Kael'thas. The Burning Legion reorganizes there.

The heroes kill Vashj, Kael'thas and finally Illidan in the Black Temple. The final arc is the Sunwell Plateau: Kil'jaeden attempts to enter Azeroth using the Blood Elves' Sunwell. He is stopped. The Sunwell is purified.

Era 9 — Wrath of the Lich King

Now — the server's present day

With Illidan dead and the Legion contained, the Lich King decides it is time. Necropolises attack the capitals. Bolvar Fordragon leaves for Northrend with Alliance forces. The Horde responds with Garrosh in the Borean Tundra.

The Wrathgate event changes everything: the Forsaken use a plague against both factions. Bolvar falls. Politics between Horde and Alliance get complicated as the war in Northrend rages on.

The ultimate goal: reach Icecrown Citadel and face the Lich King.

Where to start?

If you want to understand the story from scratch, the recommended order is the chronological one above — from Era 1 to Era 9.

If you just want the immediate context of the server, skip straight to Era 6 (Third War) and read in sequence until WotLK.

If you want to understand the central antagonist, start with Arthas' post — it's the most direct story for those who have never had contact with Warcraft III.
