Elemental is the cleanest spec to enter the endgame
If you want to play Shaman caster in WotLK without falling into the trap of overly punishing execution, Elemental is one of the best entry points. The spec has a clear rotation, an honest learning curve, and raid value that goes beyond DPS itself.
The mistake is to think that this means “spec too simple”. Elemental punishes very well those who lose uptime, delay Lava Burst, disorganize totem or enter the fight without basic caps resolved. It's a spec that's easy to understand, but demanding to execute well.
What makes Elemental work
The heart of the spec is simple:
- keep Flame Shock on target
- fit Lava Burst whenever possible
- fill with Lightning Bolt
- manage cooldowns and totems without losing pace
In practice, the good Elemental is the player who transforms this priority into a continuous flow, with no gap between casts and no silly totem, shield or position downtime.
Stat priority and why each stat matters
1. Hit Rating
Hit is zero priority until cap. Caster without enough hits misses an important spell, and a wrong spell is DPS that simply disappears.
2. Spell Power
After resolving hit, Spell Power comes in as the most stable way to increase the weight of your entire rotation.
3. Rod
Haste improves the pace of the spec, increases the density of the casts and makes the filler less blocked.
4. Crit
Crit helps, but typically doesn't compete with Spell Power and Haste for most of the progression path.
5. Intellect
Intellect helps sustain and spec synergies, but it's rarely the stat you want to deliberately stack instead of mains.
Gems and enchants: how not to get the basics wrong
Gems
The general rule is simple:
- use Spell Power gem as base
- respect socket bonus when the win is decent
- meta gem needs to be correct from an early stage
Enchantments
Elemental cannot load empty slot. The classic errors are:
- shoulder/helm without reputation enchant
- weapon with wrong enchant
- new part fitted “temporarily” without adjustment
In the endgame, “later I enchant” almost always means “I spent weeks losing value”.
Basic rotation
Practical priority
- leave Flame Shock active
- use Lava Burst on cooldown
- Fill with Lightning Bolt
- reposition totems before the fight ends
- keep your personal buffs active
The biggest loss of DPS for the beginner Elemental is not usually the wrong button. It's usually wrong order, Lava Burst delay and bad uptime.
Points of attention that reduce performance
Badly positioned totem
Bad shaman thinks that totem is a detail. A good Shaman understands that a totem out of reach is a lost buff and wasted raid value.
Flame Shock falling
Lava Burst depends on the surrounding structure. Poorly managed Flame Shock messes up your entire damage output.
Uncontrolled movement
Caster who walks too much without planning a cast loses DPS brutally.
Lava Burst delayed
Every time Lava Burst becomes available and you delay using it, you are pushing heavy damage to later for no reason.
Shield/personal buffs forgotten
Elemental without basic maintenance gets worse in sustain and comfort.
Entry gear: what you need before the raid
To enter the endgame without being loaded:
- hit cap resolved or very close to it
- correct gems on main pieces
- essential enchants made
- coherent weapon/off-hand/relic for caster
- totem/bar organized to use utility without chaos
Elemental enters the raid very early precisely because it does not depend on a miracle piece to function. But this only applies if the basics are in place.
Input gear checklist
- check hit before discussing any other stat
- prefer caster piece with Spell Power and Haste
- Gem everything the day you equip
- Don't go into raid with missing enchant
- have totem setup and keybind ready before pulling
Minimum recommendation
To get a good start with Elemental in WotLK:
- resolve Hit first
- stack Spell Power and Haste afterwards
- keep Flame Shock and Lava Burst as the core of the rotation
- treat totem management as part of DPS, not as a detail
- enter the raid with organized gems, enchants and bar
