What is Faith & Flame
Faith & Flame is an official Blizzard short story published in June 2025, during The War Within, as a lead-in to the Legacy of Arathor update. Like other official short stories, it focuses on a character and explores an aspect of the lore that will matter in the story.
Faith & Flame is about Faerin Lothar — a new character, but with a very heavy last name.
Faerin Lothar: the name that carries history
Anduin Lothar was the Champion of Stormwind, the leader of the human armies during the First and Second Wars. He died in the final battle against Orgrim Doomhammer, moments before victory — he is considered one of the greatest heroes in human history.
Faerin is an Arathi of the noble Lothar family — Anduin Lothar's branch stayed in the old world, and she sees herself as a distant relative of that lineage — and that means every time someone looks at her, they see the weight of that legacy. She grew up with the expectation of being something worthy of a hero who became legendary.
The tale explores what it's like to live under this weight while trying to maintain a faith that the world around you constantly questions.
The central question: faith under pressure
Faith & Flame is not a battle story. It's a story about what happens to beliefs when facts seem to contradict them.
Faerin is a devotee of the Holy Light — but throughout the story, she is confronted with situations in which the Light is not enough, in which good people suffer in ways that do not make sense within a worldview ordered by faith.
This is the same tension that characters like Anduin Wrynn and Uther, the Lightbringer, faced — and which each resolved in a different way. Uther radicalized. Anduin kept the faith but was corrupted. Faerin tries a third way.
The context of Midnight
Faerin matters to Midnight because Quel'Thalas — the setting of the expansion — is a place where the Holy Light will be tested in extreme ways by the invasion of the Void.
The coexistence between human paladins, Night Elf priestesses of Elune, and Blood Elves who use arcane and dark magic within the same physical space creates theological tensions that no expansion has fully explored yet. Faerin appears to be one of the vectors for this exploration.
Why read
Faith & Flame is a quality tale — careful writing, a new character but with deep roots in the lore, and a genuine philosophical question at the center.
If you're going to follow Midnight, meeting Faerin now means that when she appears in the expansion, you already understand who she is and what she's carrying. If you play WotLK and like paladins and priests, the tale touches directly on the type of faith that makes the power of these classes make sense in the universe.
