Heartlands: Thrall, Jaina and the factions

What is Heartlands

Heartlands is an official Blizzard novella (an audio drama by Adam Christopher, narrated by Chris Metzen, with chapters also published as text), released in November 2024, during The War Within. Like other official stories, it serves to prepare the narrative ground for the expansion — presenting the state of the factions, the internal conflicts, and the characters that will matter.

Heartlands focuses on Thrall and Jaina Proudmoore, and the current state of the relationship between Horde and Alliance after everything that happened in Shadowlands.

The weight of the story between Thrall and Jaina

Thrall and Jaina have one of the longest and most complicated relationships in WoW.

At first, they were unlikely allies—a former orc slave trying to build a new peaceful Horde, a human mage who believed coexistence was possible. They worked together in the Third War, divided Kalimdor without open war, built something resembling peace.

Then Theramore was destroyed. Garrosh ordered the bombardment of the city of Jaina with a mana bomb. Jaina lost everything—her city, her allies, her faith that the Horde could be different.

For years, it became a symbol of a tough stance against the Horde. He became a symbol of regret for having passed power to Garrosh.

Heartlands puts them in the same space — and what they have to say to each other carries this whole story.

What the story explores

Heartlands is not about action. It's about what's left when the war is over and people have to figure out how to continue existing in the same world.

The central question is: how do you rebuild trust between factions that have destroyed each other? It's not a rhetorical question — the story tries to answer it concretely, through two people who had real reasons to never trust each other again.

The political reorganization of The War Within

The context of Heartlands is the political restructuring that The War Within proposes: the dissolution of the rigid Alliance and Horde factions as they existed, and the formation of something new—a coalition based on the threat of the Void rather than the old divisions.

Thrall and Jaina are key figures in this transition because they both represent the past that needs to be resolved before the new can exist.

Why read before The War Within

If you're going to play The War Within (or if you want to understand WoW's current lore), Heartlands is recommended reading. It's short—just five chapters—and sets the emotional tone of the expansion better than any trailer.

The meeting between Thrall and Jaina in Heartlands is one of the best moments of Blizzard's lore writing in recent years: no battles, no big bad, just two characters with decades of history trying to discover if there is still a way forward.
