The Horde has never stopped discussing what it wants to be
The Horde begins as an invasion machine corrupted by the Legion, is reborn with Thrall as a coalition of honor and survival and remains forever divided between the ideal of redemption and brutal pragmatism.
The original Horde
The orcs of the original Horde are instrumentalized by the Burning Legion. Corruption is not a background detail. It is the foundation of the first version of the faction.
Thrall's New Horde
Thrall reorganizes the Horde as something different: less an empire of conquest, more an alliance of peoples displaced, injured, or rejected by the ruling order.
The entry of allied races
Tauren, trolls, Forsaken and blood elves enter for their own reasons. This shows that the Horde is a coalition of different histories that only work together as long as there is some common vision of the future.
Honor vs pragmatism
This is the central axis of the Horde. One side insists on honor, loyalty and dignity. Another insists on results, survival and strength, even when the moral cost rises too high.
The Horde in WotLK under Thrall
Wrath shows the Horde still supported by a relatively stable moral center before the more violent ruptures of the Garrosh and later Sylvanas era.
Minimum recommendation
- separate Original Horde and New Horde as different projects
- read Thrall as the faction's moral inflection point
- see each allied race as input for its own reason
- treat honor vs pragmatism as the great line of internal conflict
- reread WotLK as the last moment of relative stability before the next big cracks
