How to set up your UI to play better without cluttering the screen

•Interface•Brendo Arruda

The core principle of a good UI

Hierarchy.

Your screen needs to clearly say:

  • what is critical
  • what is useful
  • what is detail

Without this, the interface becomes noise.

Principles of visual clarity and hierarchy

  1. center of the screen for what decides the fight
  2. periphery for secondary information
  3. bar and resource in easy-to-consult area
  4. less duplication of information
  5. clean space to see character, floor and mechanics

Where to position critical UI elements

Nearby center

  • important feature
  • proc
  • decisive cooldown
  • relevant cast or alert

Sides and corners

-bags -chat

  • non-critical details

Configuration by function

Tank

need to see target, cast, cooldown and space

Healer

need to prioritize frames, resource and position

DPS

needs resource, proc, target and mechanics with little noise

Layout errors that hinder gameplay

  • crowded screen center
  • slash too far
  • tracker duplication
  • too many addons competing for attention
  • minimize fighting to maximize interface

Example of a clean and functional setup

  1. low center bars
  2. feature and cooldown near visual focus
  3. Visible important alert
  4. bags/chat/corners outside the critical area
  5. lots of free space to read the fight

Minimum recommendation

To build a better UI:

  1. organize by hierarchy
  2. Leave the center clean
  3. get closer to the information that really decides the fight
  4. Cut off the excess

WotLK's best UI isn't the flashiest. It's the one that lets you see the game better.
