How to get to Rogue BiS in WotLK: the right weapons and progression route
Rogue progression starts with the weapon, not the tier
Rogue is one of the classes that suffers most when the weapon is outdated. You can have the full tier for the phase and still deliver average DPS if you have a weapon from two phases ago. This happens because much of Rogue's damage goes through auto-attacks, poison procs and skills that scale directly with the weapon's DPS.
The good news is that Rogue's progression has a clear logic: resolve caps, prioritize weapons, consolidate tier. Whoever follows this order does not waste effort.
Stats that need immediate attention
1. Hit cap and Expertise cap
These are the two caps that Rogue needs to resolve before any other optimizations.
Hit cap: For special attacks with the main hand against raid bosses, the cap is 315 hit rating for dual wield. Special attacks do not miss above this value. Off-hand auto-attacks have a higher cap, but you don't need to worry about that as much — the focus is on the main hand.
Expertise cap: The soft expertise cap is 26 (6.5%). Below that, the boss can dodge its main hand attacks. Above 26, you eliminate dodge. Parrying is not a priority for DPS.
These two caps eliminate passive DPS loss. Without them, any optimization of other stats loses value.
2. Agility
After the caps, Agility is Rogue's main stat. It provides AP and Crit simultaneously and scales well with raid buffs.
3. Attack Power and Critical Strike
Both climb together with Agility. The priority between them varies a little by spec, but in general you won't go wrong prioritizing items with Agi + AP + Crit.
4. Rod and ArPen
Haste starts to be worth more in advanced stages. Armor Penetration is a relevant stat especially for Combat in ICC. It's not focus in the beginning.
Weapons by spec: the most important choice
Combat
Combat has a fundamental rule: main hand must be slow (speed 1.8 or slower). This is because the Sword Specialization skill and Sinister Strike calculation benefit greatly from a slow weapon with high DPS.
For Combat's secondary hand, you can use a faster weapon — the focus there is poison.
What to look for:
- Sword, Mace or Fist Weapon with high DPS and speed 1.8+
- Highest slow weapon item level available to you at the moment
Assassination
Assassination needs Adder's Kiss or Deadly Poison and scales very well with Agility. Weapon speed matters less than for Combat, but Dagger weapons are mandatory — Mutilate requires Dagger in both hands.
What to look for:
- Daggers with high item level
- Adder's Kiss or similar as main weapon whenever available
Subtlety
Subtlety works best with Dagger in the main hand due to Hemo and backstab rotation. For off-hand, use fast weapon for poison procs.
What to look for:
- Dagger with high item level for main hand
- Quality fast weapon in the off-hand
Badge route: where to spend and in what order
Emblem of Heroism
Recommended priority:
- Agility or AP trinket with good proc
- Slots where Naxx 10 drops take longer (belt, relic, bracelet)
- Emblem weapon only if no reasonable drops appeared
Emblem of Valor
Recommended priority:
- Tier 7.5 — start with 2 pieces to activate the set bonus
- Low item level slots that are holding your gear
- Do not close 4 pieces before confirming that the bonus is worth more than offpieces
Emblem of Conquest and Triumph
Priority:
- Tier 9 — the set bonus is very good for Rogue at this stage
- Slots where the ToC drop does not come out
- Phase trinkets if any are available
Emblem of Frost (ICC)
Priority:
- Tier 10 — mandatory for phase BiS
- Slot upgrades where ICC does not drop
- Frost trinkets with proven value
Most affordable entry items for fresh 80
Before gaining access to Naxx or consolidating raid gear:
- Daily Heroics for Emblems of Heroism and level 187 item drops
- Naxx 10 as first raid: good amount of Rogue gear distributed on bosses
- Vault of Archavon weekly whenever your side has Wintergrasp
- Auction House: gems and enchantments complete the stats that the isolated item does not cover
The objective in fresh 80 is to leave Heroics with hits and expertise covered and with a weapon at least item level 200+.
Set bonus: when it's worth taking the tier
Rogue has relevant tier bonuses in practically every phase. The general rule:
- 2 tier pieces are almost always worth the bonus
- 4 tier pieces are valid in most phases, but check if the bonus surpasses offpieces with a much higher item level
- Don't force tier 4/4 if the offpieces in that phase have much better stats for your cap and priorities
Raid route to increase gear efficiently
Phase 1 (Naxx/Eye/Vault)
- Naxx 10 first: good weapons and Rogue gear on several bosses
- Naxx 25 for tier 7.5 and more significant upgrades
- Vault weekly for free tier chance
Phase 2 (Ulduar)
- Ulduar 10 for gear and Emblems of Valor
- Ulduar 25 for the most impactful upgrades
- Prioritize weapon here: Ulduar has some of the best weapons in Rogue until ToC
Phase 3 (ToC)
- ToC 10 and 25 for tier 9 and high item level gear
- Trial of the Champion heroic for extra emblems
- Onyxia can also drop tier
Phase 4 (ICC)
- ICC is the phase of consolidating real BiS
- Emblem of Frost for tier 10
- ICC 25 Normal and Heroic for final items
- Deathbringer's Will and other ICC trinkets have very high impact
Common errors in Rogue gear progression
- Use a slow weapon in the secondary Combat hand — get the basic weapon setup logic wrong
- Ignore expertise cap — DPS attacked that the boss does without you noticing
- Prioritize tier before covering caps — full tier with low DPS per hit/expertise missing
- Not Vaulting every week — free tier being missed
- Outdated main hand weapon — good body parts, weapon still from the previous phase
- Generic stat gems — always prioritize pure Agility in the main socket when possible
Closed path to Rogue's BiS
Fresh 80 → Pre-BiS
- Heroics for emblems and item level 187
- Cover hit and expertise cap with specific gems or items
- Resolve main handgun as real priority
- Enter Naxx 10 as soon as gear allows
Pre-BiS → Phase BiS
- Consolidate tier 7 with 2-piece bonus active
- Prioritize weapon upgrades in each new phase
- Enter Ulduar and then ToC with a focus on weapon + tier
Phase BiS → Final BiS (ICC)
- Enter ICC with Triumph gear
- Tier 10 with 2 pieces active as early as possible
- Close slots with ICC 25 Heroic drops
- Resolve ICC trinkets (very high impact at this stage)
Minimum recommendation
To avoid losing real DPS due to wrong gear decisions:
- resolve hit and expertise cap before any other optimization
- treat the main hand weapon as priority in each phase
- don't force tier 4/4 if offpieces of the same item level have much higher stats
- Vault weekly without exception
- enchant and gemate each piece as soon as you equip it — don't wait for the "perfect item"
