Is it worth having Priest as a main?
In most cases, yes — if the player profile matches the class.
Priest in WotLK has a very strong package:
- two relevant healer specs
- a DPS spec with real utility
- strong presence in PvE
- high value in PvP, especially with Disc and Shadow
- ability to remain useful at various stages of the game
The problem is that the class is not usually “automatic”. Priest yields a lot, but it requires more reading, positioning and discipline than many people imagine.
Advantages of having Priest as main
1. Real versatility
You can:
- heal with Holy
- cure/prevent with Discipline
- give DPS with Shadow
2. Lots of value in groups
Priest almost always has space in the game when piloted well.
3. Good long-term value
It's a class that remains relevant throughout the expansion.
4. Strong in PvE and PvP
Few classes cross both environments so well.
Class challenges at the beginning and endgame
At the beginning
- you can get lost between specs
- healer demands more responsibility early
- Shadow doesn't always feel as explosive as other damage classes
In the endgame
- bad position weighs a lot
- mana management charges dearly
- Disc requires refined reading
- Shadow asks for consistency, not just talent
Priest rewards a lot in the long run, but it doesn't tend to “charge” a distracted player.
Cost-benefit in PvE and PvP
PvE
Very loud. Priest has structural value in raid and group, especially with Disc and Holy, while Shadow maintains space for damage and utility.
PvP
Also very loud. Shadow has a strong presence, and Discipline is one of the most classic and relevant support reads in WotLK.
If the focus is long term, Priest usually pays off a lot.
Routine profile that matches Priest
Priest tends to fit best with those who:
- likes useful class
- values group
- enjoy healing or casting responsibly
- accepts learning position, mana and priority more carefully
Who suits you least well:
- want very automatic gameplay
- gets frustrated easily with group responsibility
- prefers more “linear” and less mental classes
Criteria to decide safely
Choose Priest as main if:
- You like having more than one viable role
- want very useful group class
- accept that execution weighs a lot
- likes healer or caster in more depth
Maybe it's not the best main if:
- you want a “straighter” progression
- does not like to depend so much on position and reading
- want class with less invisible responsibility
Minimum recommendation
Priest is very worth it as a main class if:
- You really like versatility
- enjoy classes valued in groups
- accepts the running curve
- want a strong class in PvE and PvP
Priest isn't just a viable main. It's an excellent main for those who like to play with impact, utility and responsibility.
