Before the order of the titans, Azeroth was elemental warfare
Before the intervention of the Titans, the world was dominated by elemental chaos and the influence of the Old Gods. In this scenario, the Elemental Lords functioned as great primordial sovereigns of the planet's brute forces.
The four planes and their lords
Firelands — Ragnaros
The realm of fire and scorching destruction.
Skywall — Al'Akir
Dominion of the heavens, winds and storms.
Abyssal Maw — Neptulon
The deep aquatic vastness, linked to the strength and fluidity of the sea.
Deepholm — Therazane
The plane of stone, earth and stable mass.
Each of these planes exists as an extension of Azeroth's own elemental nature.
How the titans imprisoned them
When the Titans arrived and began to rule Azeroth, the Elemental Lords were part of the problem. They served the Old Gods and fought devastating wars against each other and against trying to impose order on the world.
The titans' solution was not to annihilate these gentlemen in a simple way. It was to isolate them on their own planes, removing them from the surface of the material world and reducing their ability to directly devastate Azeroth.
Ragnaros and the other three
Ragnaros is probably the most iconic of the four because it combines:
- memorable look
- maximum aggressiveness
- repeated appearances
- great connection with invasions of the mortal world
But the other three are equally important:
- Al'Akir represents air in its most overwhelming and unpredictable form
- Neptulon expresses water as a strategic and profound force
- Therazane represents stability, weight and permanence, especially in contrast to Deathwing in Cataclysm
What happens without elemental balance
The Elemental Lords aren't just individual villains. They are part of a balance. If one of them:
- falls
- go crazy
- leaves the plane itself
- or have your domain destabilized
impact can touch:
- natural balance
- elemental portals
- stability between planes
- relationship between Azeroth and its own primordial forces
Final summary
The four elemental planes — Firelands, Skywall, Abyssal Maw and Deepholm — are realms linked respectively to fire, air, water and earth. Ragnaros, Al'Akir, Neptulon, and Therazane rule these domains as Elemental Lords. When the titans shaped Azeroth, they did not destroy these forces completely: they isolated and contained their leaders in their own plans to impose order on the world.
This is why the elemental planes remain so fascinating: they remember that beneath the order of Azeroth there has always existed a reality older, more brutal and more alive than any mortal realm.
