Why does Paladin change so much in tier timing?
Because the three specs use the set differently.
Holy, Prot and Ret change:
- the bonus amount
- the urgency of closing
- the weight of the offset
- the moment when the set stops being optional
Without separating this, the player buys handsomely and earns less.
1. Ideal time to seek set bonuses
Holy
tier is worth more when it actually improves the stability or throughput of the spec
Prot
tier comes in when it helps the function, not just because the piece is a tank
Ret
tier needs to compete with weapons, trinkets and caps, which are often more urgent early
2. Priority differences by spec
Holy can prioritize sets at different times than Prot. Prot can hold set if the defensive base is still weak. Ret usually delays when weapon/trinket is still far behind.
This difference is the heart of the post.
3. Out-of-tier upgrades that could be better
Examples of things that usually clash with tier:
- weapon
- trinket
- large slot very well itemized
- piece that corrects cap or real bottleneck
4. How to decide based on current content
Ask:
- what is my biggest bottleneck right now?
- does the set help this bottleneck?
- is the tier piece good in itself?
- Does the bonus change my performance or just my progression look?
5. Investment checklist by phase
- [ ] is my current bottleneck set or raw slot?
- [ ] Is the tier piece good on its own?
- [ ] is the bonus already worth the cost?
- [ ] am I postponing the weapon/trinket to close the set early?
- [ ] does the decision speak to Holy, Prot or Ret?
Minimum recommendation
In Paladin, the tier must be entered when:
- The function is clear
- the bonus really pays off
- Bigger upgrades aren't that far behind
A good set is what improves the spec. Not what only completes the collection.
