Common errors when installing WotLK and how to resolve them
Why do so many players get stuck on installation?
The WotLK client (version 3.3.5a) is software from 2010. It was not designed to run on Windows 10/11 with the current default security settings, and the process of connecting to a private server requires manual configuration that many people make mistakes. This guide resolves the most common errors in order of frequency.
Error 1: "Unable to connect" or login screen does not appear
Cause: the filerealmlist.wtfwas not edited correctly, or was saved in the wrong format.
How to solve:
- Open the WotLK client installation folder
- Browse for the folder
Data/and inside it the folder corresponding to the language (ex:enUS/,ptBR/) - Open the file
realmlist.wtfwith Notepad (right click → Open with → Notepad) - The content must be exactly:
set realmlist logon.azerothlegacy.com.br - Delete any other lines that exist
- Save the file: File → Save (not "Save As")
Attention when saving: if Windows asks about encoding, choose ANSI or UTF-8 without BOM. Saving as Unicode may corrupt the file.
Also check: the file cannot have the extension.wtf.txt. In Windows Explorer, turn on file extensions viewing (View → Filename Extensions) and confirm that the file is named exactlyrealmlist.wtf.
Error 2: The client opens and closes immediately
Cause 1: Antivirus blocking the executable
Modern antiviruses (Windows Defender, Avast, AVG, etc.) often detect the WotLK client as a false positive and block it before opening.
Solution:
- Add the entire WotLK client folder as exclusion in your antivirus
- In Windows Defender: Windows Security → Virus & Threat Protection → Manage Settings → Exclusions → Add Exclusion → Folder
- After adding the exclusion, try opening the client again
Cause 2: Filewow.execorrupted or blocked
- Right-click
wow.exe→ Properties - On the General tab, if "This file came from another computer and may be blocked" appears, click Unblock
- Apply and try opening again
Cause 3: Lack of administrator permission
- Right-click
wow.exe→ Run as administrator - If it works, configure it to always run as admin: right click → Properties → Compatibility → Run as administrator
Error 3: "The game client is out of date"
Cause: You are using a client version other than 3.3.5a (for example, a client from another expansion or incorrect version).
How to check version:
- Open the client and look at the bottom left corner of the login screen — it should say 3.3.5a (12340)
- If another number appears, you have the wrong customer
Solution: download the correct client directly from the Azeroth Legacy website. Do not use clients from unknown sources — incorrect or modified versions cause connection problems and may contain malicious files.
Error 4: Stuck on "Connecting..." forever
Cause 1: Firewall blocking the connection
Windows Firewall may be blocking thewow.exeto make network connections.
Solution:
- Control Panel → System and Security → Windows Defender Firewall
- Click Allow an application or feature through Firewall
- Click Change Settings → Allow Other Apps
- Navigate to the
wow.exeand add it - Check both Private and Public
Cause 2: Temporary server problem
Check Discord or the Azeroth Legacy website to see if there is current maintenance or instability.
Cause 3: DNS not resolving the address
Try changing your DNS to Google's:
- Control Panel → Network Center → Change adapter settings
- Right click on your connection → Properties
- Click TCP/IPv4 Protocol → Properties
- Check Use the following DNS server addresses
- Preferred DNS:
8.8.8.8| Alternative DNS:8.8.4.4 - Confirm and try connecting again
Error 5: FPS too low or the game constantly crashes
Recommended settings for weaker PCs:
- On the login screen, click System → Graphics
- Reduce:
- Texture quality: Fair or Good
- Environment detail: disable or set to minimum
- Shadows: disable
- Projected textures: disable
- Uncheck Vertical sync
- Limit FPS: check Max foreground FPS and set 60
Borderless window mode (improves performance on some PCs):
- In the advanced video settings field, add
-windowed -d3d9to boot options - Or edit the file
Config.wtfin the WTF folder and add:SET gxWindow "1"
Outdated driver: Update your video card driver. WotLK works best with DirectX 9 drivers — older versions may have issues with very new drivers on some cards.
Error 6: Black screen when opening or after loading
Most common cause: incompatibility with full screen mode on Windows 10/11.
Solution:
- Press
Alt + Enterto switch between full screen and windowed — this often resolves - If it doesn't work, edit the
Config.wtfin the folderWTF/:
- Search for the line
SET gxWindowand change toSET gxWindow "1" - Save and reopen the client
Second solution: run in compatibility mode with Windows 7:
- Right click on
wow.exe→ Properties → Compatibility - Check Run in compatibility mode for: Windows 7
- Apply and try again
Error 7: Addons causing errors or crashes
If the client opens but gives Lua an error or freezes when entering the character:
- On the character selection screen, click AddOns
- Uncheck all addons and enter the game
- If it works, the problem is a specific addon
- Reactivate one by one to identify which one is causing the error
Addons made for retail or other versions of WoW do not work in 3.3.5a and cause errors. Always download specific addons for WotLK 3.3.5a.
Still haven't resolved it?
If none of the steps above resolved your issue:
- Open a support ticket on the Azeroth Legacy website with:
- Detailed description of the error (or print of the error message)
- Operating system (Windows 10/11, 32 or 64 bits)
- Antivirus installed
- What have you tried
- Join Discord from the server — community and support team are quick to respond
Do not attempt to reinstall the client without first trying the solutions above — most problems are configuration issues, not corrupt installation.
