How to Download and Configure the WotLK 3.3.5a Client — Step by Step
Before you begin
Azeroth Legacy runs on version 3.3.5a (build 12340) of World of Warcraft — known as Wrath of the Lich King. This is the most popular version among private servers and the client is free to download.
You'll need:
- About 10–15 GB of free disk space
- A stable connection to download the client
- A few minutes to configure the realmlist
Step 1: Download the correct client
The easiest way to download the 3.3.5a client is through Google Drive:
Download the client from Google Drive
Download the whole folder. If Drive is slow or stalls, the download page also has torrent and MEGA options.
Important:
- Only download from sources linked to the official server
- Make sure the file is version 3.3.5a — other versions (4.x, 5.x, etc.) are not compatible
- The file usually comes in
.zipor.rarformat, around 10–15 GB
If the server provides a torrent, it's generally faster and more reliable for large files.
Step 2: Extract the client
After downloading, extract the file to an easy-to-access folder — for example C:\WoW or C:\Games\WotLK.
Tips:
- Avoid folder paths with special characters or spaces — it can cause errors
- Use WinRAR or 7-Zip to extract (both are free and reliable)
- Don't install inside
Program Files— WoW needs write access to its folder
After extracting, the folder should contain files like WoW.exe, Launcher.exe, and folders like Data, Interface, WTF.
Step 3: Configure the Realmlist
The realmlist is the file that tells the client which server to connect to. Without this configuration, the game will try to connect to Blizzard instead of Azeroth Legacy.
How to configure:
- Open the client folder
- Navigate to
Data > enUS(or your language folder — could beptBR,esES, etc.) - Find the file
realmlist.wtf - Open it with Notepad (right-click → Open with → Notepad)
- Replace the existing content with the server address:
set realmlist logon.azerothlegacy.com.br
- Save the file (Ctrl+S) and close Notepad
The exact realmlist address is always available on the official server page. Use the address provided there — not the example above if it differs.
Step 4: Create your account
Before entering the game, you need to create an account on the server's website.
- Visit the official Azeroth Legacy website
- Click Register or Create Account
- Fill in your email and password
- Confirm your email if required
Your website account is the same one used to log into the game — there's no separate account.
Step 5: Enter the game
With the client configured and your account created:
- Open the client folder and run WoW.exe (not the Launcher — it may try to update to another version)
- On the login screen, enter your server account email and password
- Click Enter
- Select the Azeroth Legacy realm from the list
- Create your character and enter the world
If the realm appears in the list, the configuration is correct. If it doesn't appear, review the realmlist.
Common issues and solutions
The game won't open or closes immediately
- Verify the client is version 3.3.5a (the login screen shows the version in the lower-left corner)
- Try running
WoW.exeas administrator (right-click → Run as administrator) - Make sure your antivirus isn't blocking the executable
Realm doesn't appear in the list
- Confirm the
realmlist.wtfwas edited and saved correctly - Make sure you edited the file in the right language folder (the
Datafolder may have multiple language subfolders) - The server may be under maintenance — check Discord or the official website
Version incompatibility error
- You may have downloaded the wrong client — make sure it's 3.3.5a (build 12340)
- The version appears in the lower-left corner of the login screen
Lag or constant disconnections
- Try using a VPN if you're in a region with poor routing to the server
- Check if your firewall is blocking WoW.exe — add an exception
Black screen when entering the game
- Open video options on the login screen (the "Video Options" button)
- Lower the resolution or disable advanced effects
- On laptops, make sure the game is using the dedicated GPU, not the integrated one
Recommended settings to start
After entering the game, a few settings go a long way for your initial experience:
Video:
- Resolution: use your monitor's native resolution
- Texture quality: Medium or High (not Ultra if your PC is modest)
- View distance: 70–80% (Ultra eats performance in busy zones)
Interface:
- Enable the XP bar and quest tracker (already on by default)
- Consider installing addons — they greatly improve the experience (see the addons guide)
Useful shortcuts:
M— mapI— inventoryC— character panelK— talentsO— social panel
Ready to play
With the client configured and your account created, you're ready to begin your journey through Azeroth. If you're a new player, the welcome guide and class guide are great starting points.
For any questions not covered here, the server's Discord is the best place to ask — the community is active and helpful.
