How to create your account and log into Azeroth Legacy for the first time

Before you start

Azeroth Legacy runs on the World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King client, version 3.3.5a (build 12340). This client is different from the current WoW — you cannot play on the server using the Battle.net client or any other expansion's client.

The whole process takes under 30 minutes. You will need:

  • An internet connection to download the client
  • Disk space: approximately 16 GB
  • Operating system: Windows 7, 8, 10, or 11 (32 or 64-bit)

Step 1: Create your account on the website

  1. Go to the Azeroth Legacy website
  2. Click Register or Create Account
  3. Fill in your email and password
  4. Confirm your email via the link sent to your inbox (check spam if you don't find it)

Security tip: use a unique password for the server — don't reuse a password from other services. Keep your email and password stored in a safe place.

After confirming your email, your account is active. The email and password used during registration are the same ones you'll type on the game's login screen.

Step 2: Download the WotLK 3.3.5a client

The client download is available on the Download page on the Azeroth Legacy website. Options with different download speeds are available (direct server or torrent).

The downloaded file may be:

  • A .exe installer — run it and follow the instructions
  • A compressed .zip or .rar folder — extract it to an easy-to-access location (e.g., C:\WoW\)

Important: only download from the official Azeroth Legacy source. Clients from unknown sources may contain modified or malicious files.

Step 3: Configure the realmlist

This is the step that causes the most confusion. The realmlist.wtf file tells the client which server to connect to. By default, it points to Blizzard's servers — you need to change it to Azeroth Legacy.

Where to find the file:

  1. Open the folder where you installed (or extracted) the WotLK client
  2. Open the Data folder
  3. Inside it, open the folder matching your client's language: enUS, ptBR, or equivalent
  4. Locate the realmlist.wtf file

How to edit it:

  1. Right-click realmlist.wtf
  2. Select Open with → Notepad
  3. Delete all existing content
  4. Type exactly:
    set realmlist logon.azerothlegacy.com.br

  5. Save: File → Save (not "Save As")

Note: the file must be named exactly realmlist.wtf — with no .txt extension at the end. To verify, enable file extensions in Windows Explorer (View → File name extensions).

Step 4: Launch the game

  1. In the client folder, locate the wow.exe file
  2. Right-click → Run as administrator (recommended for the first time)
  3. The client will load and display the WotLK login screen

On the login screen:

  • Account: the email you registered with on the website
  • Password: your account password

Click Enter World and wait to connect.

Step 5: Select the realm

After logging in, you will see the list of available realms. Select the Azeroth Legacy realm and click OK.

If no realm appears or you see an error message, check:

  1. The realmlist.wtf was saved correctly (see step 3)
  2. Your antivirus is not blocking wow.exe (see the installation errors guide)
  3. The server is online (check the Discord or website)

Step 6: Create your first character

On the character selection screen, click Create New Character:

  1. Choose your faction: Alliance or Horde — players from both factions cannot communicate or play together (except in specific raids)
  2. Choose your race: each race has minor attribute bonuses and racial abilities; choose based on appearance, as the performance difference is small
  3. Choose your class: this is the most important decision — it defines your entire playstyle. If you're unsure, read the class selection guide before deciding
  4. Customize your appearance and confirm with a name unique to the server

Click Enter World and you'll enter the game for the first time.

Common problems on the first login

"Unable to connect" or the login screen doesn't appear → The realmlist.wtf was not saved correctly. Redo step 3.

The client opens and closes on its own → Your antivirus is blocking wow.exe. Add the client folder as an exclusion and try again.

"The game client is out of date" → You have the wrong client. The correct version is 3.3.5a (12340) — visible in the lower-left corner of the login screen.

Black screen on launch → Press Alt + Enter to toggle between fullscreen and windowed mode. This usually fixes it.

For a complete list of errors and solutions, see the common installation errors guide.
