Did the titans die? What the book revealed

•Lore•Brendo Arruda

Yes, the titans of the Pantheon died, but not for good. The book Warcraft Chronicle revealed that Sargeras killed his siblings on the world of Nihilam, after turning against them. Before dying, the titan Norgannon protected the souls of the Pantheon, and they survived. In Legion, the heroes freed them on Argus, and it was the titans who imprisoned Sargeras.

Why the question came up

For a long time, players believed the titans were alive somewhere in the universe and would one day return to Azeroth. Algalon, their envoy in Ulduar, reinforced that idea.

Warcraft Chronicle changed that. The book told in detail the fall of Sargeras and what it did to the Pantheon, and the reveal was one of the most talked about of its time.

What the book revealed

Sargeras, the warrior of the Pantheon, concluded that the Void would corrupt the universe and decided to burn it first. He created the Burning Legion and, when the Pantheon went after him, killed all his siblings on the world of Nihilam. The first to fall was Aggramar, his apprentice, who came unarmed.

The full story is in Legends of Warcraft #12: the end of the Pantheon.

How the souls were saved

At the last moment, Norgannon, the titan of knowledge, wove a protective veil around his siblings' spirits. The titans' souls were flung across the cosmos, and some of them reached the Keepers of Azeroth.

This has direct consequences for the lore:

  • The Keepers were left without answers and became vulnerable to the corruption of the Old Gods. Loken was the first to fall.
  • The Keeper Ra kept a fragment of Aman'Thul's power, which passed through other hands over the course of history.

What happened to the souls afterwards

The souls of the Pantheon did not stay free. The Burning Legion captured them and kept them imprisoned in Antorus, on Argus, where they were tortured. Aggramar was even corrupted and used as a weapon.

Eonar, the titan of life, managed to hide. In Legion, she helps the heroes in the Antorus raid.

The return of the titans in Legion

At the end of Legion, the heroes defeat Argus the Unmaker, the corrupted world-soul of the eredar planet, and free the souls of the Pantheon. The titans turn against Sargeras and imprison him in the Seat of the Pantheon, with Illidan as his jailer.

So are the titans alive? Partly. They exist as souls, weakened, and they did not go back to being the giants who ordered Azeroth.

And after Legion?

The following expansions kept touching this story. Shadowlands introduced the First Ones, who supposedly created the pantheons, and the Worldsoul Saga has once again questioned the role of the titans. That is why the question "did the titans die?" still has an open answer, and it is worth following the news about The Last Titan.
