"Legends of Warcraft" series — Legends #12. The prehistory of Warcraft in order, from the creation of the universe to the last Guardian of Tirisfal. The episodes are listed in order at the end of the post.
Sargeras was the defender of the Pantheon, the titan who hunted demons across the universe. He turned on his own siblings when he concluded that the cosmos was doomed to the Void and decided to burn it before that could happen. To do so, he created the Burning Legion and, on a world called Nihilam, killed the entire Pantheon. The titans only escaped vanishing forever because Norgannon shielded their souls at the last moment.
Who Sargeras was
Among the titans of the Pantheon, Sargeras was the warrior. While his siblings searched for sleeping world-souls, he fought the demons, creatures of fel magic that destroyed worlds. He defeated them and locked them away on a prison planet called Mardum.
Sargeras was also a mentor. The titan Aggramar was his apprentice and saw him as a hero.

The discovery that changed Sargeras
During his travels, Sargeras found a world-soul that had been corrupted by the Void before it awoke. He understood the plan of the Void Lords: corrupt the world-souls so that dark titans would be born, able to devour the universe.
Sargeras split that world-soul in half, and the Pantheon rebuked him for it. In his view, his siblings did not understand how big the danger was. If the Void could corrupt any world-soul, Azeroth included, then all of creation was doomed.
The fall of Sargeras
Sargeras broke with the Pantheon and reached a terrible conclusion: it was better to destroy the universe once and for all, by burning it, than to let it fall into the hands of the Void.
He returned to Mardum and shattered the demons' prison. The blast of fel energy corrupted him: his eyes and his beard turned into green flames. The demons he had imprisoned were set free, and Sargeras gathered them into an army. The Burning Legion was born, and with it the Burning Crusade, the war to burn every world.
Among those who joined him were leaders of other peoples, such as the eredar Kil'jaeden and Archimonde, who betrayed their friend Velen on Argus.

The battle of Nihilam
The Pantheon went after Sargeras to stop him. The meeting took place on the world of Nihilam. Aggramar, the apprentice, was the first to approach, unarmed, hoping to talk to his master. Sargeras killed him.
Then the entire Pantheon fell before the power of Sargeras and the Legion. Aman'Thul, Eonar, Golganneth, Khaz'goroth and Norgannon were defeated.
Norgannon saves the titans' souls
Before he died, Norgannon, the titan of knowledge, wove a protective veil around his siblings' spirits. The titans' souls were flung across the cosmos, and some of them reached the Keepers of Azeroth, the titan-forged the Pantheon had left behind.
Only the Keeper Ra understood what had happened. He kept a fragment of Aman'Thul's power. Millennia later, that power was stolen by Lei Shen, the Thunder King.
What the end of the Pantheon caused on Azeroth
- The Keepers were left without answers. They called out to the Pantheon and heard nothing. The anguish of that silence is what opened the way for Loken's corruption, the subject of the next episode.
- Sargeras turned his eyes to Azeroth. The world-soul growing inside the planet became the Legion's greatest prize. The War of the Ancients was his first attempt to get there.
The fate of the Pantheon
The titans' souls did not disappear. The Legion captured them and kept them imprisoned in Antorus, on Argus. At the end of Legion, the heroes of Azeroth freed the souls, and the Pantheon imprisoned Sargeras in the Seat of the Pantheon, with Illidan as his jailer.
