Legends of Warcraft #14: the sacrifice of Tyr

•Lore•Brendo Arruda

"Legends of Warcraft" series — Legends #14. The prehistory of Warcraft in order, from the creation of the universe to the last Guardian of Tirisfal. The episodes are listed in order at the end of the post.

The sacrifice of Tyr is one of the most important stories in Warcraft's prehistory, even though it never appeared in a strategy game. Tyr was the strongest of the titanic Keepers and the only one who discovered Loken's betrayal and managed to escape with proof. Hunted by monsters of the Old Gods, he fought to the death in a glade of the Eastern Kingdoms. The place was named Tyr's Fall, and over time it became Tirisfal.

Who Tyr was

Tyr was a titanic Keeper and the most powerful of the Watchers. He led armies of titan-forged against the Old Gods and fought alongside Odyn to defeat the Firelord Ragnaros.

In the fight against Galakrond, Tyr lost one of his hands and replaced it with a silver fist. The Silver Hand became his symbol: sacrifice in the name of an order and a justice that last.

The escape from Ulduar

When Loken was corrupted, Tyr went into hiding with two allies, Archaedas and Ironaya, while Loken hunted down everyone who could threaten him.

Before fleeing, Tyr helped the earthen in a war against the Winterskorn vrykul and called on the Dragon Aspects to end it. He also gave the Aspects a silver scale, the Silver Scale, to be used in the future.

Tyr's plan was to steal the Discs of Norgannon, the records of Ulduar, which proved Loken's betrayal. Archaedas and Ironaya entered the city and took the discs, while Tyr distracted Loken.

The C'Thraxxi

Loken sent the C'Thraxxi, monstrous generals of the Old Gods, after the group. Two of them, Zakajz and Kith'ix, caught up with Tyr.

Tyr held the two of them off for six days, in a quiet glade far to the south of Ulduar, to give his allies time to escape with the discs.

The death of Tyr

In the end, Tyr destroyed Zakajz in an explosion that killed them both. Kith'ix was badly wounded, fled to the west and never came back.

Ironaya named the place Tyr's Fall. The vrykul of the group buried the bodies right there, with Tyr's silver hand on the grave. In the vrykul tongue, the name became Tirisfal, the region where Lordaeron and the city of Undercity later arose.

Archaedas, Ironaya and their companions took the discs to Uldaman, where they settled.

The legacy of the Silver Hand

Tyr's tomb was guarded first by the vrykul and later by Tyr's Guard, an ancient human order. The legend of his sacrifice inspired two things players know:

  • The Order of the Silver Hand, the paladins of Lordaeron, founded by Uther and Archbishop Alonsus Faol.
  • The city of Tyr's Hand, in the Eastern Plaguelands, which later falls into the hands of the Scarlet Crusade.
