Legends of Warcraft #19: the song of Aegwynn

•Lore•Brendo Arruda

"Legends of Warcraft" series — Legends #19. The prehistory of Warcraft in order, from the creation of the universe to the last Guardian of Tirisfal. The episodes are listed in order at the end of the post.

Aegwynn was the most powerful Guardian of Tirisfal in history. She hunted demons for centuries, faced an avatar of Sargeras in Northrend and defeated it, locking its body away in the Tomb of Sargeras. What she did not know was that the titan's spirit had hidden inside her. When Aegwynn decided to choose her own successor by herself, she had a son, Medivh, and both the Guardian's power and the shadow of Sargeras passed to him.

The Guardian who would not obey

Aegwynn was chosen as Guardian of Tirisfal while still young. She was stronger than any Guardian before her, and she knew it. Over time, she began acting on her own and ignoring the orders of the Council of Tirisfal, which had chosen the Guardian precisely to keep that power in check.

She lived far longer than a normal human life, because the Guardian's power extended the life of whoever carried it.

The battle in Northrend

Aegwynn discovered that demons were hunting dragons in Northrend. She went there and faced the demons, and then found out it was a trap. Waiting for her was an avatar of Sargeras, the fallen titan who commanded the Burning Legion.

Aegwynn fought the avatar and won. She destroyed its physical form and took the body to an ancient temple in the Broken Isles, sunk beneath the sea since the Sundering. That place became the Tomb of Sargeras, the same one Gul'dan seeks in the Second War and that opens the way to Legion.

The trap inside the victory

Aegwynn's victory was exactly what Sargeras wanted. The moment the avatar died, the titan's spirit hid inside the Guardian herself. Aegwynn did not notice.

Sargeras stayed there, quiet, waiting for a body he could use.

Medivh, the chosen son

When the Council of Tirisfal asked Aegwynn to pass her power to a successor of their choosing, she refused. She decided that she herself would choose the next Guardian: a son of her own.

Aegwynn joined with Nielas Aran, the court mage of the kingdom of Azeroth, and had a son, Medivh. The Guardian's power passed to the baby while he was still in the womb. Along with the power went the spirit of Sargeras, which finally had a body to shape from the very beginning.

Medivh grew up in Stormwind, in his father's care. The power awoke in him in his teenage years and left him in a coma for almost ten years. When he woke up, he was no longer just himself. Only later did he go to live in Karazhan, the tower in Deadwind Pass.

The end of the Guardians

Aegwynn's choice put an end to the order of Guardians. Medivh, controlled by Sargeras, helped Gul'dan open the Dark Portal and brought the Horde to Azeroth. He was killed by Anduin Lothar and Khadgar, and there was no other Guardian after him.

Aegwynn outlived her son. She appears later in the story, already old, carrying the guilt of having given Sargeras the path he was looking for.
