"The History of the Expansions" series — Patch 7.2. The story of World of Warcraft told expansion by expansion, with the patches that changed it. The episodes are listed in order at the end of the post.
Legion patch 7.2 is the moment Azeroth returns to the site of its greatest defeat and wins. Horde and Alliance retake the Broken Shore, enter the Tomb of Sargeras and defeat Kil'jaeden, the demon behind almost every tragedy in Warcraft history, from Draenor to the Lich King. The victory opens the way to the last stage of the war: the planet Argus.
Back to the Broken Shore
At the start of Legion, the Broken Shore was where Varian died and where the Horde and the Alliance began accusing each other of betrayal. In patch 7.2, the two factions return together, now with the Pillars of Creation gathered.
The Legionfall campaign rebuilds the offensive step by step: players raise buildings such as the Command Center and the Mage Tower, fight off invasions and close in on the Legion's defenses around the tomb. It is the first moment of the expansion when Horde and Alliance truly fight side by side.
Inside the Tomb of Sargeras
The Tomb of Sargeras was built by the night elves as a temple to the goddess Elune. The temple sank into the sea during the Great Sundering. Millennia later, the Guardian Aegwynn defeated the avatar of Sargeras and locked his body in the sunken ruins. Gul'dan reopened the tomb at the start of the expansion.
In the raid, the heroes face the Legion's servants who occupy the temple, the remains of the priestesses of Elune and, finally, the Fallen Avatar, the body of Sargeras's avatar reanimated by the Legion.

The fall of Kil'jaeden
The last boss of the tomb is Kil'jaeden the Deceiver himself. He is responsible for:
- corrupting the orcs of Draenor, deceiving Ner'zhul and Gul'dan;
- creating the Lich King from the spirit of Ner'zhul;
- being the old friend of Velen who chose to serve Sargeras when the eredar split on Argus.
The fight ends on a platform in the Twisting Nether, the void between worlds. Kil'jaeden is defeated, and Velen watches the end of his old friend.

Argus appears in the sky
With Kil'jaeden dead, a cracked green planet appears in the sky of Azeroth: Argus, the homeworld of the eredar and the heart of the Burning Legion. The war changes sides: instead of defending Azeroth, the heroes will attack the enemy's home.
That is the subject of patch 7.3 and of the next episode in the series.

Where to see it in WotLK
- Sunwell Plateau, on the Isle of Quel'Danas: Kil'jaeden is already the final boss of the TBC raid, trying to come through the Sunwell.
- The Exodar, on Azuremyst Isle: the home of Velen, who fled Kil'jaeden when the eredar split. The ship itself came from Outland, not from Argus.
- Shadowmoon Valley: the Black Temple, where Kil'jaeden held Illidan to his promise to destroy the Lich King.
