"The History of the Expansions" series — Patch 8.1. The story of World of Warcraft told expansion by expansion, with the patches that changed it. The episodes are listed in order at the end of the post.
Battle for Azeroth patch 8.1, called Tides of Vengeance, is the Alliance's answer. After losing Teldrassil, it retakes Darkshore and carries the war to the heart of the Horde in Zandalar. The chapter ends with the Battle of Dazar'alor, the assault on the golden pyramid of the Zandalari, and with the death of King Rastakhan.
Why the Alliance struck back
At the start of Battle for Azeroth, Sylvanas's Horde burned Teldrassil, the night elves' tree-city, and the Alliance answered by taking the ruins of Lordaeron. The war became an exchange of blows, and Azerite, the blood of Azeroth that seeped from the wound in Silithus, was the reason for all of it.
The Horde had won a powerful ally: the Zandalari, the oldest troll empire in the world, with the largest fleet in Azeroth. The Alliance, in turn, had won back Kul Tiras with the return of Jaina Proudmoore. With two fleets on each side, patch 8.1 is a war for the sea.

The Battle for Darkshore
The first front was Darkshore, the coast next to the ashes of Teldrassil. The night elves, led by Tyrande Whisperwind, wanted their land back, and the Horde wanted to keep it.
Darkshore became an open warfront, where Horde and Alliance fought over the region. It was there that the night elves' pain over the burning of the tree stopped being only grief and turned into a thirst for revenge, and Tyrande started on the path that would lead her to become the Night Warrior.
The assault on Dazar'alor
The second front was the sea. Jaina and the admirals of Kul Tiras planned a direct strike on Dazar'alor, the capital of the Zandalari, a golden pyramid high in Zuldazar. If the capital fell, the Zandalari fleet would stop supporting the Horde.
The Battle of Dazar'alor was the patch's raid. It is told from both sides:
- The Alliance invades the pyramid, fights its way through the Zandalari defenses and reaches the king.
- The Horde defends the city and faces the Kul Tiran fleet that surrounds the harbor, up to the showdown with Jaina herself.
The death of Rastakhan
Inside the pyramid, the Alliance faced King Rastakhan, who fought with the help of the loa of death, Bwonsamdi. Rastakhan fell. His daughter, Talanji, inherited the throne of a wounded empire, and her bond with Bwonsamdi began to weigh on the future of the Zandalari.
The king's death did not pull the Zandalari out of the Horde. Quite the opposite: Talanji grew closer to the faction that had helped her survive.

What patch 8.1 left behind
- The war got personal. Tyrande wanted revenge for Teldrassil, and Jaina wanted revenge for Theramore.
- The Horde started to crack. Every one of Sylvanas's victories cost more, and leaders like Varok Saurfang began to doubt the direction of the war. That doubt explodes in patch 8.2.5, in Saurfang's mak'gora against Sylvanas.
- Azshara enters the stage. The storms around the fleets had another source, and the next threat came from the bottom of the sea. That is patch 8.2, in Nazjatar.

Where to see it in WotLK
Battle for Azeroth comes after WotLK, but the pieces of this story exist in your game:
- Darkshore and Teldrassil: the coast and the tree-city are still intact in 3.3.5a.
- Zul'Gurub and Zul'Aman: the Gurubashi and Amani troll empires, cousins of the Zandalari.
- The Zandalari on Yojamba Isle: in Classic, the Zandalar tribe asks for help against Hakkar, on Yojamba Isle, in Stranglethorn.
- Theramore: Jaina's city, before it was destroyed.
