Legends of Warcraft #11: the Sunwell

•Lore•Brendo Arruda

"Legends of Warcraft" series — Legends #11. The prehistory of Warcraft in order, from the creation of the universe to the last Guardian of Tirisfal. The episodes are listed in order at the end of the post.

The Sunwell is the magical heart of the high elves. It was born from a vial of water from the Well of Eternity that Dath'Remar Sunstrider carried out of Kalimdor in exile. On the Isle of Quel'Danas, the elves poured the vial into a spring and created a new source of arcane energy, which sustained the kingdom of Quel'Thalas for millennia.

The forbidden vial

In the previous episode, the Highborne were cast out of Kalimdor for refusing to give up arcane magic. As he left, Dath'Remar secretly took a vial of water from the Well of Eternity.

Without the Well, the elves suffered. Magic was part of who they were, and far from the original source they felt weak. The vial was their only chance to recover what they had lost.

The creation of the Sunwell

After reaching the north of the Eastern Kingdoms, the elves found an island off the coast: Quel'Danas. There, they poured the vial into a spring, and the Well's water reacted with the land's lines of energy. The Sunwell was born, a source of pure magic, more stable and less dangerous than the original Well.

The elves became so bound to it that they came to depend on the Sunwell to live well. That dependence is the reason for the tragedy that comes millennia later, when Arthas defiles it.

The founding of Quel'Thalas and Silvermoon

Around the Sunwell, the elves founded the kingdom of Quel'Thalas and its capital, Silvermoon. Dath'Remar's family began to reign, and his descendants, the Sunstriders, ruled until King Anasterian and Prince Kael'thas.

The elves built cities of crystal and gold, with magic on every corner. Silvermoon became a symbol of the elegance and pride of the high elves.

The Runestones

To protect the kingdom, the elven mages raised the Runestones, monoliths spread along the borders of Quel'Thalas. They held up a magical barrier that hid the kingdom and kept enemies away.

That barrier held back the Amani trolls for a long time. Millennia later, it was broken by Arthas during the Scourge invasion.

The war against the Amani

The forests of Quel'Thalas were the lands of the Amani trolls, and they never accepted the elves there. The war between the two peoples lasted for generations. The elves had magic, and the trolls had numbers and knew the land.

Over time, the Amani grew too strong. The elves realized they would not win alone and sought help from a young people living to the south: the humans of Arathor. That alliance is the subject of episode 15.

  • In TBC, Kil'jaeden tries to use the Sunwell to enter Azeroth, and the heroes purify it with the heart of the naaru M'uru. The Sunwell is reborn, now with Light and arcane magic together.
  • In Midnight, the Sunwell becomes the center of the war against the Void.
