What is Dual Spec?
Dual Specialization (Dual Spec) is a WotLK feature that allows your character to have two complete talent builds and switch between them outside of combat, without paying the reset cost with each change.
Each character has Spec 1 and Spec 2. You can configure talents, action bars and glyphs independently for each one. The switch is instantaneous — you click on the desired spec icon, confirm, and you're ready.
Cost: 1,000 gold, paid once to any Trainer Class.
Why is Dual Spec so valuable?
Without Dual Spec, every time you want to change your build — even if it's a single change, like going from PvE to PvP — you pay a talent reset. The cost starts low and goes up to 50 gold per reset, which adds up quickly if you switch frequently.
With Dual Spec, you configure both builds once and switch freely.
Most common use cases:
| Spec 1 | Spec 2 | Profile | |---|---|---| | DPS (raid) | Tank (dungeon) | Player who wants flexibility | | Main PvE | PvP (arena or BG) | Mixed player | | Healer (raid) | DPS (solo/questing) | Healer who doesn't want to suffer outside of raid | | Tank (content) | DPS off (backup) | Tank that covers absences |
Dual Spec is especially useful for hybrid classes (Paladin, Druid, Shaman, Priest, Warrior) which naturally have very different roles between specializations.
When to buy Dual Spec?
This is the question that most people get wrong. The straight answer: don't buy it before level 80 — unless you already know exactly what you're going to use it for.
Why Wait:
- Before 80, you will frequently reallocate talents as you learn the class
- The cost of 1,000 gold weighs more on leveling levels
- You still don't know enough about the class to put together two useful builds
When it makes sense to buy:
- You have reached level 80 and have a defined spec
- Want to start participating in different content (PvP, raids, dungeons)
- You play a hybrid class and want to cover two roles with no reset cost
Exception: If you already know the class well (for example, you returned to the server with previous experience), purchasing around level 60–70 may be advantageous.
How to configure Dual Spec the right way
Step 1: Access the nearest Classe Trainer
You pay any Trainer Class NPC in your class. Look in Dalaran (the main city in WotLK) for ease of access.
Step 2: Buy Dual Specialization
The cost is fixed: 1,000 gold. After purchasing, a new button appears in your talent panel to switch between Spec 1 and Spec 2.
Step 3: Configure your Action Bars separately
When you switch specs, the action bars also switch automatically — but only if you configure this. The first time you use Spec 2, organize your skills from scratch. After saving, the game remembers the configuration for each spec separately.
Step 4: Configure Glyphs per spec
Glyphs can also be different for each spec. Configure the glyphs for your PvP spec differently than your PvE spec — the game saves both settings.
Dual Spec for every type of player
For those just starting out in the endgame
The first recommended setup is DPS spec + tank or healing spec, depending on your class. This gives you access to groups as DPS and the option to join as support when you need a faster group.
Groups looking to tank or healer form much faster. With Dual Spec, you can do both without committing to just one.
For PvP players
Set your raid spec to Spec 1 and your PvP spec to Spec 2. PvP builds often prioritize survivability and control over pure damage, so you wouldn't be able to use the same build in both content efficiently.
For healers
Pure healer leveling is slow and lonely. With Dual Spec, configure your heal spec for dungeons and raids, and a DPS spec for questing and farming. You no longer have to choose between a better leveling experience and being ready to heal in a group.
Most common errors with Dual Spec
Error 1: Saving identical build in both specs
There is no point in having two specs the same. If you don't know which second build to put together, do some research — the second spec should have a different purpose.
Error 2: Not configuring the Spec 2 action bars
If you don't set your skill bars to Spec 2, you'll switch specs and end up with an empty or messy bar. Configure it the first time you activate it.
Error 3: Buying before understanding the class
Many people spend 1,000 gold as soon as they reach 80, build any Spec 2 and never use it. Expect to be clear about what you want to do before investing.
Error 4: Ignoring the glyphs of the second spec
Glyphs make a real difference — PvP spec and PvE spec often need completely different glyphs. Don't forget to configure both.
How much does it cost in practice?
The cost of 1,000 gold seems high for those just starting out, but it is a one-time investment. For reference:
- A talent reset costs up to 50 gold per time
- If you change builds 20 times throughout the game, you've already spent 1,000 gold — and you still don't have Dual Spec
- With Dual Spec, you can change as many times as you want, at no additional cost
If you still don't have 1,000 gold when you reach 80, read the post about how to farm gold — the Farm route in Northrend covers this amount in a few hours of play.
Summary: is it worth it?
Yes. Dual Spec is one of the most impactful quality of life improvements in WotLK. For hybrid classes, it's almost mandatory. For pure DPS who want to do PvP, it is very convenient.
What to remember:
- Buy at level 80, when you know what you want
- Configure the action bars and glyphs of the two specs separately
- Use the second spec for a different role than the main one
- The investment pays off in a few weeks of regular play
