WotLK Emblems Guide: what to buy first and how not to waste them
What are Emblems?
Emblems are badge tokens that drop from bosses in Heroic dungeons and raids. You exchange them for high-quality gear at a specific vendor in Dalaran — without relying on random drops.
They are the most reliable way to improve gear in WotLK. Every Heroic dungeon farm generates Emblems, every raid boss generates Emblems, and the shop sells everything from trinkets to tier pieces.
Where to exchange Emblems
The vendors are located in Dalaran, near the Dalaran Crater. Each type of Emblem has its own vendor — there is no exchange between different types.
What to buy first — by role
The purchase order changes depending on your role. This is the main difference compared to other Emblem guides: there is no universal priority — there is priority by role.
Physical DPS (melee/ranged)
Priority:
- Trinkets — Emblem trinkets for physical DPS frequently outperform raid drops for several phases. An Attack Power or Armor Penetration trinket is usually the biggest upgrade per Emblem invested
- Belt or boots — slots that are hard to upgrade via dungeon drops
- Tier pieces — once you have enough Emblems for 2 pieces (set bonus activates at 2)
Caster DPS / healer
Priority:
- Trinkets — Spellpower trinkets from Emblem vendors are excellent and frequently BiS for a long time
- Staff or offhand — high-quality weapons and offhands rarely drop in Heroics
- Head or chest — slots with the highest stat contribution
Tank
Priority:
- Defense or stamina trinkets — Emblem tank trinkets are very strong and hard to replace
- Bracers or gloves — slots that are rarely well covered by random drops
- Belt — same reason: the correct item rarely appears as a drop
Most common Emblem spending mistakes
Mistake 1: Buying pieces that drop easily in dungeons
If a good item appears frequently in Heroics, don't spend Emblems on it. Emblems are finite per week — save them for slots that drops don't cover well.
Mistake 2: Ignoring trinkets
Emblem trinkets are frequently Best in Slot for several phases. Many people prefer visible pieces (chest, legs) for the visual upgrade feeling, but trinkets have a disproportionately high impact on actual performance.
Mistake 3: Buying a single tier piece
Tier set bonuses only activate with 2 or 4 pieces. A single tier piece is generally inferior to an Emblem item of the same slot. Plan to complete the bonus before you start buying tier pieces.
Mistake 4: Accumulating without spending
Emblems don't expire, but time without an upgrade is lost progression. Spend when you have enough for the next priority item — don't wait for the "perfect moment."
How many Emblems can you accumulate per week?
| Activity | Emblems/week | |---|---| | Daily Random Heroic (bonus) | ~35 | | Extra Heroics without bonus | ~20–40 | | VoA 10 + VoA 25 | ~6 | | Full Naxxramas 10 | ~18 | | Ulduar 10 (first bosses) | ~10–15 | | Estimated total | ~90–120/week |
Most Emblem upgrades cost between 25 and 60 Emblems. At this pace, you can get 1–2 upgrades per week while maintaining the routine.
Efficient routine
Daily:
- Complete the Daily Random Heroic via Dungeon Finder (
I) — the Emblem bonus is significant, skipping a day means Emblems left on the table
Weekly:
- VoA 10 and VoA 25 (separate lockouts, do both)
- Naxxramas or Ulduar according to your progression
- Weekly raid quest in Dalaran (gives extra Emblems)
Spending:
- Trinkets (highest impact per Emblem)
- Slots not covered by drops
- Second and fourth tier pieces to complete set bonuses
