Vault of Archavon: WotLK's easiest raid — and why everyone should do it
What is the Vault of Archavon?
The Vault of Archavon (VoA) is a raid located within Wintergrasp, the open PvP zone of Northrend. With 4 bosses, simple mechanics and tier and PvP gear drops, it is the most accessible raid in WotLK — and one of the most rewarding for time invested.
Each boss can be done with 10 or 25 players and each version drops different loot (10-man and 25-man have separate lockouts, so you can do both in the same week).
The main rule: whoever controls Wintergrasp enters
This is the detail that most confuses those arriving at VoA for the first time: you can only enter if your faction controls the Wintergrasp fortress.
Wintergrasp is an open PvP zone with battle every 2h30min. The winning faction retains control until the next battle, and only players from that faction can join VoA.
In practice:
- Keep an eye on the Wintergrasp timer in Dalaran (Wintergrasp Emissary NPC has the current status)
- When your faction wins, the server chat announces it — this is the time to look for a group
- It is common to see "/2 VoA 25 LF DPS" on the Trade Channel immediately after changing control
- Control lasts until the next battle, so there is a 2h30min window to raid
The 4 bosses of VoA
Archavon the Stone Watcher
The original VoA boss, available since the release of WotLK.
Mechanics: extremely simple. The boss uses an ability called Crushing Leap that makes him jump and crush nearby players. Move the group away from the boss and just two tanks alternating with the Impale debuff are enough for combat.
Tip: the boss will grab a random player. If it's you, don't do anything — the tank will take it back. Just keep attacking.
Emalon the Storm Watcher
Added with patch 3.1 (Ulduar).
Mechanics: Emalon comes with 4 Tempest Minions (adds). Periodically, one of the adds receives an Overcharge stack — if it reaches the limit, it explodes and kills everyone around it.
How it works:
- All DPS focus the Overcharge add immediately
- The add needs to die before exploding
- Meanwhile, an off-tank holds the other 3 adds
Important: DPS needs to switch targets quickly when Overcharge appears. Whoever stays on the boss when an add explodes will die. It's the only mechanic that requires attention — and it's simple if the group cooperates.
Koralon the Flame Watcher
Added with patch 3.2 (Trial of the Crusader).
Mechanics: Koralon uses Meteor Fists — an ability that cascades damage to players closest to the target. The solution is simple: all melee DPS players stay away from the boss during Meteor Fists.
Other than that, combat is tank-and-spank with a fiery aura that increases in intensity over time. The party needs to deal damage quickly before enrage.
Toravon the Ice Watcher
Added with patch 3.3.2 (Icecrown Citadel).
Mechanics: Toravon uses Frozen Orbs that appear and move around the room. If an orb touches a player, they take damage and become frozen. Avoid the orbs moving around the room.
It also applies an ice debuff to random players — when it reaches 10 stacks, the player explodes. Healers must remove or cure the debuff before reaching the limit.
What drops at VoA?
This is why every serious guild does VoA every week: the drops include tier pieces from current raids and PvP gear from the current season.
Examples of loot:
- Tier 7 parts (Naxxramas tier) — in the original VoA
- Tier 8 parts (Ulduar tier) — after patch 3.1
- Tier 9 parts (ToC tier) and PvP Season 7 gear — after patch 3.2
- Tier 10 parts (ICC tier) and PvP Season 8 gear — after patch 3.3
Loot is not guaranteed — as with any raid, it is random. But as VoA is weekly and takes less than 30 minutes, it is always advantageous to include it in the routine.
Tip: Even if you already have Naxxramas or Ulduar gear, you can still drop a tier piece from the current content. VoA is the only raid where you can get a tier without going into the corresponding main content.
How to find group for VoA
Once Wintergrasp changes control:
- Open the Trade chat (
/2) - Search for "VoA 10" or "VoA 25"
- Whisper the group leader to ask for a place
If there is no group formed, you can start it yourself: open Raid Finder or post in chat. VoA groups form quickly because everyone wants to get in before the next battle of Wintergrasp.
Minimum composition for VoA 10:
- 2 tanks
- 2–3 healers
- 5–6 DPS
For VoA 25, more of the same — the composition is flexible because the bosses are simple.
Is it worth participating in Wintergrasp?
Yes — and not just to access VoA.
Wintergrasp is a large-scale PvP battle (no player limit) with vehicles, turrets and a central fortress. Participating generates Stonekeepers Shards — a currency used to purchase PvP gear.
Additionally, winning gives access to VoA and the Essence of Wintergrasp buff, which increases XP and reputation in Northrend for 1 hour.
Even if you don't like PvP, participating in Wintergrasp from time to time is advantageous: you guarantee access to VoA, accumulate Shards for PvP gear and get the XP/reputation buff.
Recommended routine with VoA
VoA should be treated as a fixed weekly activity, not optional.
Ideal flow:
- Monitor the Wintergrasp timer
- Join the battle to help your faction win
- Immediately after winning, join a VoA 10 group
- If you have time and have a group, do VoA 25 too
- Both lockouts renew weekly
With 30 minutes of investment per week, you can drop tier parts that would take weeks to obtain via Emblems or luck in other raids.
Summary: why do VoA every week
| Reason | Detail | |---|---| | Easy Bosses | Simple mechanics — any group with clean basic communication | | Short time | 4 bosses in 20–30 minutes | | Two lockouts | VoA 10 and VoA 25 in the same week | | Tier drops | Drop tier pieces from current content without needing to enter the corresponding raid | | PvP gear | Drops gear from the current PvP season — useful for arena players | | Zero cost | Does not spend Emblems, does not require previous progression |
If your faction controls Wintergrasp and you are not in VoA, you are leaving weekly loot on the table.
