ICC 10 or ICC 25: which one is worth it for your player profile?

ICC 10 or ICC 25: which one is worth it for your player profile?

The final raid of WotLK

Icecrown Citadel (ICC) is the most important raid in Wrath of the Lich King — and the last one. With 12 bosses culminating in the confrontation with the Lich King, it is where Arthas's story ends and where the most powerful gear of the expansion is available.

ICC is available in two sizes: 10 players and 25 players. The lockouts are independent — you can do both in the same week. But which one should you prioritize?

The fundamental difference: loot

| | ICC 10 | ICC 25 | |---|---|---| | Item level (normal) | 251 | 264 | | Item level (Heroic) | 264 | 277 | | Frost Emblems per boss | 2 | 5 | | Composition | 2 tanks, 2–3 healers, 5–6 DPS | 5–7 tanks/healers, 18–20 DPS | | Gear requirement | ilvl ~232–245 | ilvl ~245–258 | | Organization difficulty | Low | High |

The 13 ilvl difference between 10 and 25 is significant — it's not just a number: ilvl 264 has more stamina, more offensive stats, more sockets. In theory, those doing 25-man progress faster.

In practice, however, organizing 25 people is much harder than 10.

ICC 10 — who is it for?

ICC 10 is for you if:

  • You play with a small, fixed group (friends, a smaller guild)
  • You don't have time for the commitment of 25-man raiding (which requires more sessions per week)
  • You're new to endgame and want to learn the bosses before attempting 25-man
  • You prefer a more coordinated experience where each person has a clear role

Advantages of ICC 10:

  • Easier to form a group — 10 people instead of 25
  • More flexible with schedules and absences (replacing 1 person in 10 is simpler than in 25)
  • Bosses on 10-man are simpler (fewer adds, smaller AoE areas, more straightforward mechanics)
  • Great for learning the raid before attempting 25-man

Disadvantage: loot is of lower ilvl and Frost Emblems drop in smaller quantities per boss.

ICC 25 — who is it for?

ICC 25 is for you if:

  • You are part of a guild with a stable 25-player roster
  • You want the best gear available in WotLK
  • You are willing to commit to fixed raid schedules per week
  • You already have experience with ICC 10 and want the greater challenge

Advantages of ICC 25:

  • Loot at ilvl 264 (normal) and 277 (Heroic) — the best of the expansion
  • 5 Frost Emblems per boss (much faster to accumulate Frost to buy gear)
  • A more epic raid experience with 25 well-coordinated players
  • Exclusive achievement trophies and 25-man mounts

Disadvantage: requires large roster organization, schedule commitment, and usually a dedicated guild.

Frost Emblems change the calculation

Frost Emblems are the highest currency in WotLK — exchanged for ilvl 251 gear at the Dalaran vendor. The main source is ICC bosses.

  • ICC 10: 2 Frost per boss × 12 bosses = 24 Frost per week (full clear)
  • ICC 25: 5 Frost per boss × 12 bosses = 60 Frost per week (full clear)

If you manage to do both lockouts every week, you accumulate up to 84 Frost — but a full ICC clear every week is rare, especially at the start.

Items in the Frost shop cost between 30 and 95 Emblems. With ICC 25, the path to BiS via Emblems is much faster.

Hard Mode — where ICC gets truly difficult

Both versions have optional Heroic modes for several bosses. Hard modes activate additional mechanics and reward loot at ilvl 264 (10-man Heroic) or 277 (25-man Heroic).

ICC 25 Heroic is considered the hardest content in WotLK — especially the final bosses: Sindragosa and Lich King Heroic are challenges that separate top guilds from the rest.

For most players, ICC 10 hard mode is already a satisfying challenge and far more accessible.

The strategy that works best: do both

Since the lockouts are separate, the most efficient approach is:

  1. Monday or Tuesday (reset): ICC 25 with the guild — maximum priority
  2. During the week: ICC 10 with a smaller group or PuG

This way you maximize Frost, have two chances at drops from the same boss, and learn the raid in different contexts.

If you don't have access to a 25-man group, focus on ICC 10 and accumulate Frost to buy gear from the vendor — the path is slower, but it still leads to the same endgame.

Summary: which one to choose?

| Profile | Recommendation | |---|---| | Casual player without a guild | ICC 10 via PuG | | Small, organized guild | ICC 10 regular + 25-man attempts | | Raid guild member | ICC 25 priority + ICC 10 as complement | | Focus on maximum gear | ICC 25 mandatory | | Learning to raid | ICC 10 first |

Neither choice is wrong. ICC 10 leads you to the same confrontation with the Lich King with the same narrative — only the loot is lower. For most players on Azeroth Legacy, the combination of ICC 10 as a base and ICC 25 when available is the ideal balance.
