The most common mistake when hitting level 80
Most players who reach 80 spend their first days without direction — they run a dungeon here, do a quest there, spend Emblems on the wrong item, and after a week realize they've made almost no progress.
WotLK's endgame has a well-defined progression order. Following that order greatly accelerates the path to raids.
Step 1: Gear up with basic quest rewards (immediately)
Before any dungeon, check whether you've claimed all available quest rewards in Northrend. Many quests in Icecrown and Storm Peaks reward items at ilvl 187–200, which are better than what you're likely wearing when you hit 80.
Priority zones for gear quests:
- Icecrown — main zone quests
- Storm Peaks — K3 and Ulduar quest chain (lore)
- Zul'Drak and Sholazar Basin — if you haven't finished them yet
Don't skip this step. It's free and speeds up your entry into Heroics.
Step 2: Buy available reputation gear
Several Northrend factions sell gear pieces in their reputation stores. You don't need maximum reputation — Honored already unlocks a good portion of the items.
Priority factions:
- Kirin Tor (Dalaran) — excellent caster ring
- Knights of the Ebon Blade — head enchant + gear for melee/tank
- Argent Crusade — head enchant for casters and healers
- Sons of Hodir — shoulder enchants (mandatory, see step 6)
- Wyrmrest Accord — gear for tank and caster
Buy each faction's tabard and wear them during dungeons to passively gain reputation.
Step 3: Farm Emblems in Heroic dungeons
With quest gear and basic reputation, you're ready for Heroic dungeons. The main goal of Heroics isn't just boss loot — it's accumulating Emblems.
How it works:
- Each boss in Heroic drops Emblems of Heroism or Emblems of Valor (depending on the patch)
- The weekly chest in Dalaran gives bonus Emblems
- The Emblem vendor in Dalaran sells gear at ilvl 200–213
Purchase priority at the Emblem vendor:
- Trinkets (many Emblem trinkets are Best in Slot for a long time)
- Empty slot pieces (slots with no item or a very weak one)
- Tier pieces (if you already have 2 pieces, consider completing the 4-piece bonus)
Step 4: Run Vault of Archavon every week
VoA is the fastest raid in the game (20–30 minutes, 4 bosses) and drops current-content tier gear. It costs no Emblems and requires no prior progression — only that your faction controls Wintergrasp.
Run VoA 10 and VoA 25 every week. They have separate lockouts — you can do both in the same week.
Step 5: Run Naxxramas 10
With Heroic gear and some Emblems spent, you're ready for Naxxramas 10 — WotLK's entry-level raid.
Naxxramas has 4 wings + 3 final bosses (Sapphiron, Kel'Thuzad, and one boss from each wing). It drops ilvl 200 in 10-man.
How to find a group:
- Trade Channel (
/2) in Dalaran — advertise or look for "Naxx 10 LF [role]" - Your own guild run, if you have one
Naxxramas 10 is not hard — it's WotLK's "learning" raid. With Heroic gear, you can already contribute.
Step 6: Raise your Sons of Hodir reputation
Sons of Hodir sells the shoulder enchants for WotLK — and there is no other source for these enchants. You need to be at least Honored to buy the basic enchant, and Exalted for the best one.
How to level it up:
- Go to Storm Peaks and complete the main K3 quest chain until Sons of Hodir is unlocked
- Once unlocked, do the Sons of Hodir dailies every day — 5–7 quick quests
Shoulder enchants are mandatory for any serious content.
Step 7: Set up your glyphs
Glyphs are purchased from Inscription vendors in Dalaran or on the Auction House. Research the best glyphs for your spec — the output difference can be 5–10% without them.
Step 8: Buy flasks and consumables
Starting with Naxxramas, consumables begin to matter. They are not optional in serious raids.
By role:
- Physical DPS: Flask of Endless Rage + Attack Power food
- Caster DPS/Heal: Flask of the Frost Wyrm + Spellpower food
- Tank: Flask of Stoneblood + Stamina food
Step 9: Dual Spec — buy it now
If you haven't bought it yet, now is the time. For 1,000 gold, set up your second specialization to gain the flexibility to join groups in different roles.
Especially useful for hybrid classes: Paladin, Druid, Priest, Shaman, Warrior, Death Knight.
