Naxxramas for beginners: WotLK's entry raid explained

What is Naxxramas?

Naxxramas is the first progression raid in Wrath of the Lich King. A floating necromancer fortress controlled by the lich Kel'Thuzad, divided into four themed wings plus the final confrontation. It's the content that any fresh 80s will come across first — and the right place to start.

Available versions:

  • 10-man: 10 players, item drop level around 200
  • 25-man: 25 players, item drop level around 213

For those who are reaching level 80 now, Naxxramas 10 is the natural destination after some heroic dungeons.

Prerequisites for entry

There is no quest, attunement or reputation requirement to enter Naxxramas — just be level 80 and a reasonable minimum item level.

Recommended item level:

  • 10-man: 180+ (mix of heroic drops and Northrend quest)
  • 25-man: 200+ (heroic dungeon gear or Naxx 10)

If you just reached 80, do 3 to 5 days of heroic dungeons before trying to join a Naxxramas group. Your gear will improve quickly and you will enter more prepared.

How to get there: Naxxramas is in Dragonblight, Northrend. The entrance portal is the floating platform north of Wyrmrest Temple. You can fly there or use the portal in Dalaran.

Raid structure — the 4 wings

Naxxramas has 15 bosses divided into four wings + the Frostwyrm Lair where the final boss is located. You can do the wings in any order, but you need to complete them all to access Kel'Thuzad.

Wing 1 — Arachnid Quarter (Spider)

The two bosses of this wing deal with poison, webs and basic positioning mechanics.

Anub'Rekhan

  • Opening boss, simple mechanics
  • Locust Swarm: the boss channels an aura of damage — the tank must kite the boss around the room while this happens
  • The group stands still; DPS continue attacking without moving until Swarm

Grand Widow Faerlina

  • Accompanied by adds
  • Frenzy: when activated, it starts dealing huge damage — the mechanic is to kill an add to remove the Frenzy
  • Pay attention to timing: kill an add whenever Frenzy activates

Maexxna

  • Web Wrap: it throws a player against the wall trapped in web; others must break it to free
  • Enrage at 30%: she goes berserk — group defensive cooldowns need to be used here
  • Never let the trapped player die without trying to break the web

Wing 2 — Plague Quarter (Prague)

Bosses with poison and disease mechanics. Tests healers more than DPS.

Noth the Plaguebringer

  • Summons skeletons periodically during combat
  • Phase 2: he disappears for a few seconds (on a counter) — the group must deal with the adds
  • When you return, the adds must be dead or controlled

Heigan the Unclean — The Dance

  • The most famous boss in Naxxramas. Requires all players to move correctly.
  • The floor in front of the boss has zones that activate in sequence (from left to right and back)
  • The default is: when the zone lights up, exit it. The boss stands still; you dance around him
  • There is no way to survive if you don't learn the pattern. Practice in the first few seconds before attacking
  • DPS continues to deal damage while moving — don't stop attacking

Tip: Look for a video or diagram of the "Heigan dance" before the raid. Those who enter without knowing it usually die in the first 10 seconds and will wait for the group to finish alone.

Loatheb

  • Healer mechanic: during much of the combat, healing is blocked by a debuff
  • There is a short 3 second window every 20 seconds in which the cure works
  • Healers need to use all their healing in those 3 seconds — the rest of the time, the party survives with shields and absorbs
  • DPS must go all out — the boss has a tight enrage timer

Wing 3 — Military Quarter (Military)

Four Death Knight bosses. This wing requires a little more coordination, especially the fourth boss.

Instructor Razuvious

  • Two understudies (adds) stay with the boss — they can be controlled with Mind Control (Priest)
  • Mechanics: a Priest uses Mind Control on one of the understudies and tanks the boss with it while the other tank holds the second understudy
  • If there is no Priest, tanks can alternate on the boss paying attention to the hit debuff

Gothik the Harvester

  • The room is divided by a barrier; half of the group stands on each side
  • Adds appear and die; when they die, they cross to the boss's side as stronger adds
  • Communication is essential: the group on the living side warns when the adds are dead so the boss side can prepare

The Four Horsemen

  • Four simultaneous bosses in the four corners of the room
  • Main mechanics: each boss applies a cumulative debuff — when reaching 4 stacks, the tank must swap with the other tank in the opposite corner
  • Standard layout: 2 tanks on the two front Horsemen, 2 tanks on the two back Horsemen (or range DPS on the back ones)
  • If someone is in the range of two Horsemen at the same time, they will be debuffed by both - avoid

Wing 4 — Construct Quarter

Opening boss and the second hardest in Naxxramas.

Patchwerk

  • Pure proof of damage and healing — no special mechanics other than the enrage timer
  • The boss has two tanks (he deals damage to two targets simultaneously with Hateful Strike)
  • Healers need to heal both tanks at the same time. If DPS is too slow, enrage kills the group

Grobbulus

  • The boss injects poison into random players — they need to leave the group immediately and deposit the poison cloud at the edge of the room
  • All players need to be spread out — if you stand on top of someone while being injected, you will poison half the group

Gluth

  • There are adds (Zombie Chow) that run towards the boss — if they arrive, they heal Gluth for a lot
  • Someone (usually a kiter, usually a Hunter, Frost Mage or Paladin) is responsible for holding the adds away from the boss
  • A Priest or Paladin can use Decimate to finish adds when Gluth uses this ability

Thaddius — The Polarity Test

  • Mechanics: at the beginning of combat, each player receives a charge: positive (+) or negative (-)
  • Players with the same load must stay TOGETHER. Opposing charges together deal enormous damage to both
  • When the load changes (Polarity Shift), you need to move to the opposite side immediately
  • Positioning tip: divide the room into two sides clearly before starting. Positives on the right, negatives on the left.

Frostwyrm Lair — The last two bosses

Sapphiron

  • Ice mechanics: he flies and starts breathing ice in a random direction
  • Before taking a breath, he blocks damage with an ice shield — use Ice Block Blizzard to cover ice blocks that appear on the ground, protecting the group
  • Players must hide behind ice blocks during Ice Blast

Kel'Thuzad — The Final Boss

  • Phase 1: adds appear from the side windows — the group must eliminate the adds before focusing on the boss
  • Phase 2 (after 3m30s): Kel'Thuzad activates and the real combat begins
  • Frost Bolt Volley: deals damage to everyone — healers need to be careful
  • Shadow Fissure: a circle appears on the ground — leave immediately
  • Void Zone: permanent circle on the ground — don't stay on top
  • Mind Control: it controls a player; others should CC it or wait for the end

Preparation before entering

Recommended consumables:

  • Flask of your class (Flask of the Frost Wyrm for DPS caster, Flask of Endless Rage for melee, etc.)
  • Buff food (Dragonfin Filet, Snapper Extreme, etc. — depends on your main stat)
  • Potions for emergency (Health Potion)

Essential Addons:

  • DBM (Deadly Boss Mods): mechanic timers for each boss. Mandatory.
  • Recount: to track DPS and make sure the group is at minimum

Study before:

  • Heigan dance (watch it first — it's the only mechanic that eliminates those who don't know it)
  • Thaddius polarity (understand positive/negative before entering)
  • Four Horsemen tank swap (communicate with tanks in advance)

Loot — what to expect to drop

Naxxramas' items are item level 200 (10-man) and 213 (25-man) — a significant improvement over heroic dungeon gear.

The drops are general: any slot can drop on any boss. Loot is distributed by class — keep an eye on upgrades for your character using an addon like AtlasLoot to know which bosses to prioritize.

Most common errors in PUG by Naxxramas

Not knowing Heigan's dance — results in immediate death and public embarrassment in chat. Study first.

Don't switch in Four Horsemen — if the tank doesn't switch at the right time, the debuff stacks kill in seconds.

Open wrong load on Thaddius — always stay on the right side right after Polarity Shift. Hesitating causes chained death.

Do not kit the add on Gluth — if the Zombie Chow reaches the boss, he is fully healed and the fight drags on indefinitely.

Arrive without consumables — serious raid groups expect you to come prepared. Flask and food are the minimum.

How long does it take?

With an organized mid-level group, Naxxramas 10 can be completed in 2 to 3 hours. In PUG with inexperienced players, expect 3 to 4 hours.

The raid resets weekly on Tuesdays (check server times). You can do Naxx 10 and Naxx 25 in the same week — they are separate lockouts.
