WotLK Emblems: How They Work and What to Buy First

What are Emblems?

In WotLK, Emblems are the primary endgame gear currency. Instead of relying 100% on drop luck in raids, the game lets you accumulate emblems by completing dungeons and raids — and exchange them for high-level gear at specific vendors.

This creates a parallel progression system: even if you're unlucky with loot, you still advance by buying pieces with Emblems.

The 5 types of Emblem

WotLK has 5 different types of Emblem, each associated with a content tier. You can't freely convert between them (except from higher types to lower via downgrade vendors, but this rarely pays off).

| Emblem | How to get it | Gear tier | |---|---|---| | Emblem of Heroism | Heroic Dungeons, Naxxramas 10 | Item level 200 | | Emblem of Valor | Naxxramas 25, Eye of Eternity, Vault of Archavon | Item level 213 | | Emblem of Conquest | Ulduar 10 and 25 | Item level 226 | | Emblem of Triumph | Trial of the Crusader, Heroic Dungeons (after patch 3.3) | Item level 245 | | Emblem of Frost | Icecrown Citadel, Daily Heroic | Item level 264 |

Server progression note: Depending on which content phase Azeroth Legacy is in, not all Emblems may be available yet. Check the server website or Discord for the current phase.

Emblem of Heroism — the first you'll accumulate

The Emblem of Heroism is the starting point for any fresh 80. You earn them by running Heroic Dungeons (2 per dungeon), and they can be exchanged at vendors in Dalaran.

What to spend first

The golden rule: prioritize slots that are hard to upgrade through dungeon loot.

Recommended priority:

  1. Trinkets — Emblem of Heroism trinkets are often the best of the tier. Trinkets rarely drop exactly what you need.

    • Physical DPS: Mirror of Truth (45 emblems)
    • Caster: Sundial of the Exiled (40 emblems)
    • Healer: Forethought Talisman (40 emblems)
  2. Ring — ring slots have few good drops from heroics, and an emblem purchase offers a guaranteed upgrade.

  3. Cape — if you haven't had luck in heroics, the emblem cape is a solid intermediate option.

Avoid spending on:

  • Chest, legs, shoulders — these drop frequently from heroics and you'll likely replace them soon
  • Main weapon — Emblem of Heroism vendors rarely have the best weapon for your class; check first

Emblem of Valor — the bridge to Ulduar

With Emblems of Valor, you can get item level 213 gear — equivalent to what drops in Naxxramas 25. They're earned primarily in entry-level raids.

What to spend

At this tier, tier sets (set pieces with special bonuses) start to appear. If the 2- or 4-piece set bonus for your class is strong, prioritize completing the set.

Priority:

  1. Tier set pieces — if the 2/4-piece bonus is relevant for your class and spec
  2. Off-tier slots — shoulders or legs if the set bonus isn't attractive
  3. Trinkets if you still don't have good ones

Emblem of Conquest — Ulduar tier

Emblems of Conquest arrive with Ulduar and unlock item level 226 gear. At this point, you're already in serious raid content.

The same logic applies: prioritize tier set pieces if the bonuses are strong, and fill weak slots with individual pieces.

Emblem of Triumph — the most important tier for most players

With patch 3.3, Emblems of Triumph start dropping from all Heroic Dungeons — which revolutionizes progression. Any player can, in principle, accumulate item level 245 gear just by doing daily heroics.

Why this emblem is special

  • You earn 2 per day by completing the daily heroic
  • Enables item level 245 gear — above Trial of the Crusader normal drops
  • Massively accelerates progression for alts (alternate characters)

Priority:

  1. Tier set pieces — Tier 9 with 4-piece bonus is strong for almost every class
  2. Trinkets if you still don't have ones from the previous tier
  3. Off-tier slots (cape, ring, etc.)

Emblem of Frost — the final tier

Emblems of Frost are the top of progression. They drop in Icecrown Citadel and 2 are available per day via the Daily Heroic. With them, you buy item level 264 gear — the best emblem gear in the game.

What to buy with Emblems of Frost:

  1. Primordial Saronite — crafting material for powerful BoE items (and can be sold on the AH)
  2. Tier 10 pieces — Tier 10 is the strongest in WotLK; 4-piece bonus is essential
  3. Off-tier 264 pieces for non-tier slots (cape, ring, etc.)

Tip: Buy Primordial Saronite before any piece if you'll need more than 2 weeks to save up for what you want. The extra gold may be worth more in the long run.

General tips about Emblems

Do the daily heroic every day The bonus Emblems from the daily dungeon are significant — skipping a day is leaving Emblems on the table.

Don't hoard waiting for the "perfect" item It's common to see players accumulating hundreds of emblems without spending because they're "waiting for the right item." Immediate upgrades are worth more than waiting.

Check what's available at the vendor Emblem vendors are in Dalaran — look for the Emblem NPCs in the central area. Before spending, browse all available items and compare with what you have equipped using sites like Wowhead (search for the WotLK version).

Prioritize slots with the biggest impact on your performance For DPS: weapon and trinkets have the biggest impact. For healers: mana pool and healing throughput. For tanks: stamina and defense.

Summary: spending priority

| Tier | Emblem | Spend on | |---|---|---| | Fresh 80 | Heroism | Trinkets → Ring → Cape | | Naxxramas | Valor | Tier set (if bonus is good) → Weak slots | | Ulduar | Conquest | Tier set → Weak slots | | ToC | Triumph | Tier 9 (4 pieces) → Remaining slots | | ICC | Frost | Tier 10 (4 pieces) → Primordial Saronite |

With this system, you always have a clear progression path — even during weeks with bad loot luck.
