Eye of the Storm: when to focus flag and when to focus base

•Advanced PvP•Brendo Arruda

What decides Eye of the Storm?

EotS mix:

  • base control
  • rotation
  • center dispute
  • flag capture

As the map combines resource generation per base with the central flag, the wrong focus decision drops the match very quickly.

Criteria for changing focus during the match

Focus base when:

  • your team is short on side coverage
  • enemy is about to flip number of bases
  • your rotation is disorganized
  • picking up the flag now wouldn't change the economy of the match

Focus flag when:

  • the team already controls enough to convert the delivery well
  • there is clean window in the middle
  • the flag actually generates resource advantage
  • your comp can pick up and leave safely

The big mistake is to always treat flag as an automatic objective.

Ideal composition for each objective

To hold base

Classes with:

  • strong defense
  • good rotation reading -sustain
  • ability to hold up to reinforcement

To rotate/get flag

Classes with:

  • mobility
  • control
  • situational burst
  • chance to cross the middle without dying for free

Rotation errors that give you an advantage

  1. abandoning base too soon
  2. overcrowding the middle
  3. Respond poorly and waste time
  4. run after kill while the base falls
  5. insist on flag without map coverage

Map reading for quick decision

Always ask:

  • how many bases do we have?
  • does the flag convert a lot now or a little?
  • are we losing map due to obsession in the center?
  • Is the next fight worth resources or just ego?

EotS tactical checklist

  • [ ] do we have enough bases for the flag to be worth more?
  • [ ] Is someone defending with conscience?
  • [ ] Is the rotation clear?
  • [ ] Is the medium a real priority now?
  • [ ] does the decision increase resources or does it just seem active?

Minimum recommendation

In Eye of the Storm:

  1. base wins map
  2. flag gains value when the map is already reasonably stable
  3. wrong rotation loses game

In EotS, the good team doesn't run to the center. He knows when the center really matters.
