Objective or kill? How to decide better in each battleground
The central question of the macrogame in BG
Are you struggling to win the map or just to look active?
In almost all BG, kill is only valid when:
- opens objective
- prevents rotation
- removes defense
- creates capture or advance window
If the kill doesn't change the state of the map, it could just be a pretty distraction.
Criteria to prioritize objective or fight
Prioritize objectives when:
- the map can be changed by base, flag, advance or defense
- the fight is happening far from what decides the match
- the kill does not generate a real advantage
- rotation time is worth more
Prioritize fighting when:
- kill opens the objective
- you need to clear defense
- there is pickoff on key target
- enemy composition depends on that player alive
Situations where kill creates real advantage
- kill important carrier or defender
- eliminate healer at decisive point
- break enemy group in rotation
- gain space for vehicle, cap or delivery
Useful kill is not the prettiest. It's what changes the map.
Focus errors that cost the game
- fight for pride
- abandon objective to chase
- win fight and lose map
- kill “random” people away from the main rotation
- not realizing that time is running in the enemy's favor
How to align decisions with team composition
Your team is strongest in:
- pickoff?
- defense? -sustain?
- mobility?
- mass pressure?
The decision between kill and objective changes depending on the comp. Teams with good rotation need less long brawls. Strong fighting teams can use fight to open objectives.
Decision-making checklist in BG
- [ ] does this fight change the map?
- [ ] does the kill open the objective or does it just feed the ego?
- [ ] are we dropping base/flag/advance for this reason?
- [ ] does my comp want brawl or rotation?
- [ ] What's worth more now: time or combat?
Minimum recommendation
In battleground:
- objective almost always comes first
- kill only becomes a priority when there is a real advantage
- the map needs to send more than your impulse
Good BG is not the team that kills the most. It's the team that kills at the right time.
