Why do this before playing?
Most new players spend hours playing with a standard interface, bad FPS, poorly distributed keys and confusing chat — and only realize the problem when they are stuck in a group and can't communicate anything or when they die because they didn't see a warning on the screen.
Setting up the basics at first login costs 20 minutes and saves you a headache for weeks.
1. Video and performance
The 3.3.5a client runs well on modest machines, but some default options drop FPS unnecessarily.
What to adjust first
Open Esc → System → Video:
- Resolution: use your monitor's native resolution
- Texture Quality: Medium is the right balance for most machines
- Spell Detail / Particle Density: reduce to Low if you experience crashes in raid or city
- Shadow Quality: the one that weighs the most — set it to Low or deactivate it
- View Distance: Medium is enough for PvE and PvP; no need for Far
- Vertical Sync: disable, especially if playing on a 60 Hz monitor
Sign that it is good
If you're seeing 30+ stable FPS in Dalaran at peak hour, it's working. Short of that, reduce Shadows and Particle Density first.
2. Interface and layout
WotLK's default layout puts the action bars in a bad position for those who use the mouse to move.
Minimal adjustments without addon
- Open interface lock: right click on experience bar → Unlock ActionBars
- Move the bars to where your hand can comfortably reach
- Activate the second sidebar (right bar) to have more visible keybind space
- Activate Show Helm and Show Cloak only if you want - does not affect gameplay
With interface addon
If you are going to use a full UI addon (ElvUI, SpartanUI), install it before starting to configure bar position — it will overwrite everything.
3. Keybinds: the least you need from the beginning
Playing with mouse skills in the endgame is a big limiter. Even if you're not going to play hardcore, having correct keybinds from the start creates the right habit.
Recommended base structure
| Key | Function | |---|---| | 1–5 | Core Spin Skills | | Q/E | Strafe (walk sideways) | | R | Burst or cooldown ability | | F | Interaction or utility skill | | Shift+1 to Shift+5 | Second layer of skills | | Shift+Q / Shift+E | Most used or long CDs | | Side mouse (if you have) | Mount, trinket or personal heal |
What not to do
- Don't leave Q and E as "turn left / turn right" — this slows down movement
- Don't put everything in high numbers (7, 8, 9) that you can't reach quickly
- Don't leave crucial skills only accessible by mouse
4. Essential addons before playing
You don't need 30 addons. You need a maximum of 5 to get a good start.
Installation
- Download the addons in ZIP
- Extract inside
WoW/Interface/AddOns/ - Open the game, click on AddOns on the character selection screen
- Check what you have installed
The essentials
Questie — adds quest icons to the map and world. Without it, questing in WotLK is blind.
Deadly Boss Mods (DBM) — warns about boss mechanics in dungeons and raids. Required for any group content.
Recount or Skada — shows real-time DPS/HPS. Useful to know if you are doing well or not.
AtlasLoot — see drops from any boss without having to leave the game to check the website.
OmniCC — shows the cooldown in numbers on the buttons instead of just animation. It makes a huge difference in the rotation reading.
5. Chat Settings
WoW's standard chat brings everything together in one tab, which is chaos in the city.
How to organize
- Right click on the chat tab → Create New Tab
- Create a tab called Guild/Party with just Guild, Party and Whisper
- Create another World call with General, Trade and LocalDefense
- Keep the two separate — you don't need to read Trade while on a boss
Quick Settings
- Under Interface → Social, check Block trades from strangers if you want to reduce spam
- Uncheck AutoQuest Accept if you don't want to automatically accept quests
6. Loot Settings
In groups, poorly configured loot creates confusion and conflict.
- In Interface → Controls, make sure Auto Self Cast is enabled (useful for support classes)
- In group situations, combine the loot method first: Need/Greed for casual dungeons, Master Looter for raids
Final checklist
Before leaving the starting city, confirm:
- [ ] Stable FPS above 30 in Dalaran
- [ ] Shadows and Particle Density adjusted
- [ ] Q and E configured as strafe
- [ ] Key skills on keys 1–5
- [ ] Questie, DBM and OmniCC installed and active
- [ ] Chat tab separating Guild from Trade
- [ ] Auto Self Cast activated (healers and supports)
With that out of the way, you won't need to stop in the middle of a dungeon to adjust anything.
