Gruul and the gronn of Blade's Edge

•Lore•Brendo Arruda

Gruul the Dragonkiller is the greatest of the gronn, the stone giants of Draenor, and the lord the ogres of the Blade's Edge Mountains worship as a god. In The Burning Crusade, he is the final boss of Gruul's Lair, one of the first raids in Outland.

Who are the gronn?

The gronn are half-flesh, half-stone giants native to Draenor. They have a single eye, spikes on their skin that serve as weapons and rocky plates that work as armor. Their blood is black.

Their origin is ancient. The lore says the gronn descend from the magnaron, who arose from the fallen colossals. And the colossals, in turn, were born from pieces of Grond, a stone giant. Spores from a plant creature called Botaan weakened some of the magnaron, and some of them became gronn.

The gronn are also the ancestors of the ogron and the ogres. The great ogre lords still keep gronn traits, such as their huge size and bony protrusions.

The gronn and the ogres

For a long time, the gronn ruled the ogre clans with an iron fist. The ogron worshipped them as gods and sacrificed captives to appease them.

That changed with Gog, an ogre slave. With arcane magic, he killed several gronn. The revolt that followed gave birth to the ogres' Gorian Empire.

Even so, the bond never ended. In TBC, the ogres of Blade's Edge serve a gronn again: Gruul.

Gruul against the Thunderlord orcs

When Blackhand was warchief of the Horde, the Thunderlord clan, led by Fenris, hunted the gronn of Draenor. Many gronn died.

Gruul was one of the few who survived. He defended himself in his own lair, in the mountains, and held out through several attacks. The Thunderlord casualties grew so high that Fenris gave up.

Why is Gruul the Dragonkiller?

The title comes from the war against Deathwing, after the Second War. The black Aspect hid dragon eggs in Gorgrond, the region that later became the Blade's Edge Mountains.

Gruul led the gronn and the ogres against the dragons guarding the eggs. The magic of the Bladespire ogres pulled most of them from the sky. Gruul impaled almost all of them on the stone spires of the mountains. The bones are still there, at Dragons' End.

The Alliance expedition joined this war. Khadgar, Turalyon and Alleria Windrunner were chasing Deathwing, who held the Skull of Gul'dan. They joined Gruul. Together, they attacked Deathwing, destroyed the eggs and impaled the lesser drakes.

Deathwing struck back and nearly killed Gruul. Khadgar saved him: he took apart the adamantium plates that held Deathwing's unstable body together, and the dragon fled. With this victory, Gruul earned the title of Dragonkiller.

His most famous line comes from that time: "I! I am Gruul, greatest of gronn! This my land. My mountains. And you will not take them!"

Gruul in The Burning Crusade

Draenor shattered and became Outland. Gruul survived. In TBC, he is the gronn overlord of the ogres of Outland and rules with an iron fist. The ogres of the Blade's Edge Mountains worship him as a god.

Among his followers are clans that came from the old Gorian Empire, such as the Bladespire. There are reports that Gruul was allied with the Illidari, Illidan's forces, but the lore does not make clear how far that alliance went.

And Gruul does not act alone. His sons ravage Blade's Edge and Nagrand.

The seven sons of Gruul

| Son | Where he is in TBC | What he does | |-------|------------------|-----------| | Goc | Blade's Edge Mountains | Master of the Bladespire ogres. | | Gorgrom the Dragon-Eater | Bloodmaul, in Blade's Edge | Master of the Bloodmaul ogres, behind their plans against Sylvanaar. He killed many black dragons. | | Grulloc | Blade's Edge Mountains | Guards a sack that Baron Sablemane wants. | | Maggoc | Blade's Edge Mountains | The warden of the eastern mountain range. | | Skulloc Soulgrinder | Soulgrinder's Barrow, in Blade's Edge | Trained by the ogre warlock Vim'gol the Vile. | | Durn the Hungerer | Nagrand | Roams the Spirit Fields around Oshu'gun. | | Slaag | Terokkar Forest | Exiled himself and became master of the Gordunni ogres. |

The sons' raids on Nagrand also threaten the Mag'har, the orcs who never drank the demonic blood. Their story is in Mag'har: the orcs who never drank the blood.

High King Maulgar, the Hand of Gruul

Before reaching Gruul, the raid faces High King Maulgar, the king of the Blade's Edge ogres. He is the High King of the Bladespire clan, which was once one of the weakest ogre clans.

Maulgar was stronger than any other ogre of his age. The old king asked for proof of that strength. Maulgar snapped his neck. Power passed from the Boulderfist clan to the Bladespire, and Gruul took notice.

Since then, Maulgar has been fanatically loyal to the gronn. He is Gruul's right hand and the guardian of his lair, hence the title Hand of Gruul. He surrounds himself with the strongest ogres of the clan, the Ogre Council:

  • Kiggler the Crazed, the shaman.
  • Blindeye the Seer, the priest, who heals the group.
  • Olm the Summoner, the warlock, who summons fel stalkers.
  • Krosh Firehand, the mage.

When the fight starts, Maulgar shouts: "Gronn are the real power in Outland!"

Gruul's Lair: the raid

Gruul's Lair is in the Blade's Edge Mountains, north of Ruuan Weald. It arrived in patch 2.0.3, in January 2007. It is a 25-player raid with two bosses:

  1. High King Maulgar and the Ogre Council.
  2. Gruul the Dragonkiller, the final boss.

It needs no attunement. Gruul drops the Tier 4 leg tokens and the Earthen Signet, which was part of the quest "The Cudgel of Kar'desh", the old Serpentshrine Cavern attunement. That attunement was removed in 2007.

How Gruul fights

The fight shows the gronn's strength. His main abilities are:

  • Growth: about every 30 seconds, Gruul grows and hits 15% harder.
  • Hurtful Strike: a blow on the player with the second-highest threat in melee range.
  • Ground Slam: throws everyone away and applies an effect that slows players until they turn to stone.
  • Shatter: the stoned players shatter and damage anyone nearby.
  • Cave In: rocks fall from the ceiling in random areas.
  • Reverberation: silences everyone for a few seconds.

Gruul says little. When the fight begins, he says "Come... and die." On Ground Slam, he says "Scurry" and "No escape."

The lore also records his end. Lady Malande told Illidan about Gruul's death one day before the siege of the Black Temple.

Where to see it in WotLK

The server is WotLK 3.3.5a, so Outland and the TBC raids are in the game.

  • Blade's Edge Mountains: Gruul's zone, for levels 65–68. Dragons' End holds the bones of the impaled dragons.
  • Gruul's Lair: the 25-player raid, north of Ruuan Weald. At level 80 it gets much easier, and you can go back with a small group to see the fight and complete the raid's achievement.
  • Quest "Showdown": Rexxar and Baron Sablemane ask for help killing Goc, Gruul's son. Rexxar lives in Thunderlord Stronghold. His story is in The Frozen Throne #6: Rexxar and the founding of Durotar.
  • Quest "Gorgrom the Dragon-Eater": Gruul's son in the Bloodmaul camp, in a house with a ramp (30.1, 21.9).
  • Quest "WANTED: Durn the Hungerer": Gruul's son who roams the Spirit Fields of Nagrand (29, 63).
  • Trial of the Champion: Argent Confessor Paletress can summon the Memory of Gruul, a memory of the gronn, to fight the group. See Trial of the Champion: is it worth farming?.
